Today I found out that Gainesville, Virginia eliminated its railroad grade crossing about 12 years ago.
Gainesville is a far flung suburb of DC, what you might call an "exurb". I remember that grade crossing from frequent trips to UVa as a student and alum.
I fondly remember a grade crossing in Alexandria too but it was eliminated when I was a child in the 1970s.
This is the proper way to build out rail in conjunction with roads. Compare and contrast with the boondoggle that is California's High Speed Rail.
Dangerous grade crossings still exist in urban San Mateo County. I routinely deal with one in Redwood City.
It simply should not exist--next to FaceBook HQ. All that money, all that development,; and you've got a grade crossing like you're in cattle country?
It's infuriating. CAHSR is being built backwards.
