I had not known that archers in the Islamic world measured draw weights although it sounds like in practice they often knew "this is my strong bow for war, that is my half-weight bow for trick shots" rather than get out a scale, a rope, and a basket of rocks. Especially since bows of natural materials change in stiffness with time and weather. I don't think the Latins measured draw weights before the 19th century.

The sigil was drawn in salt and ash, the candles lit at the pentagram points, the incantation declaimed.

There was a shimmer - a demon appeared.

"Curious. What ritual is this?"

"I got it from ChatGPT. I included all protections in my prompt!"

"I see," the demon said and stepped out of the sigil.

Question: Are there any good books on #UFO encounters/alien abductions from the perspective of #folklore scholars?

I.e. an analysis of how these beliefs spread and developed? I am _not_ interested in any examination of any alleged "true facts" behind these stories - just how the _beliefs_ spread.

Pompeii discoveries reveal family’s tragic final moments in the House of Helle and Phrixus

Archaeologists have unearthed the grim final moments of a Pompeii family in the House of Helle and Phrixus, offering a poignant glimpse into life and death during the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The discoveries, published in the E-Journal of the Pompeii Excavations, reveal a desperate attempt at survival as volcanic forces engulfed the city.

The house, a mid-sized Roman domus on the Via del Vesuvio, contains richly decorated rooms, including an atrium with an impluvium (rainwater basin), triclinium (dining room), and bedroom. As the eruption was occurring, lapilli—small, fiery volcanic stones—fell through an opening in the roof above the atrium. As the volcanic debris filled the house, its occupants took refuge in a bedroom and barricaded the door with a wooden bed in a futile effort to stay alive...
