Trying to live the questions.

I help clients shape hypotheses, ship iterative experiments, and build holistic software products for their customers. I believe in small, cross-functional teams that pair, honest conversations, and lots of embodied thinking.

Interested in “tools for thought” but will still take a good pen and notebook any day.

In the last five years, we've gone from "employees will never have to go into an office" to "employees need to be in the office because creative and innovative work can only be done face-to-face between humans" to "lol we don't need humans"

HOMEWORK MACHINE

The Homework Machine, oh the Homework Machine
Most perfect contraption that's ever been seen.
Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime,
Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds' time,
Your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be.
Here it is — "nine plus four?" and the answer is "three."
Three?
Oh me ...
I guess it's not as perfect
As I thought it would be.

Would you like another prediction?

Generative AI as we know it is a bubble.

It’s unsustainable.

Relying on it now will result in very expensive work to undo that damage in years to come. And we’re going to live with the accuracy debt for decades.

We are going to have an enormous skills and critical thinking shortage in the very near future, once the layoffs have slowed, and organisations start to cave in under the weight of their own shortsightedness.

Consultancy demand will go through the roof for people who actually know what they’re doing, attracting large salaries, and many won’t be able to afford this, dooming them further. There will be some bittersweet justice in those being laid off picking up the big money.

Vendors will transition to alternative technologies while trying to convince us that the technology is improving and AGI is just around the corner. They’re selling you something they haven’t figured out yet, and you won’t be able to afford (or will likely be dead) when it does actually arrive.

Alternative technologies will continue to be researched, and progress will be made. But they’re not the same thing, don’t let them fool you.

@stilloranged
weird interaction with a student this week. they kept coming up with weird "facts" ("greek is actually a combination of four other languages") that left me baffled. i said let's look this stuff up together, and they said ok, i'll open a search bar, and they opened... ch*tgpt@stilloranged
and i was like "this is not a search bar" and they were like "yes it is, you can search for anything in here"
the thing that made me feel crazy is like. every kid that's using this as a browser is getting new BESPOKE false "facts." this isn't "a widespread misconception about X that stems from how it's taught in schools." each individual kid is now hooked into a Nonsense Machine. With the "widespread misconception about X" you can start at a baseline. like, ok, in tenth grade we all talk about X thing from history, and that leaves us with some misguided concepts about X, but we can correct that as students get broader understandings of the world. But with this, each child is getting UNIQUE wrong facts they are SURE are correct...
because they did what we told them to do! they "looked it up"! they got it from somewhere! it's not a kid making up a belief on hearsay and assumption... it's something they think they LEARNED@stilloranged:
this kid was extremely combative with me, and i understood why. i was sitting in front of him and telling him that the internet, a computer, technology, all these supposedly authoritative things... were wrong. and that i, one person, was right. he basically *couldn't* believe me. he decided that i was simply a teacher who'd made a mistake. he could check it, after all! he could look it up! he could find the REAL facts. i obviously hadn't done that, i was just an adult who'd decided i was smarter than him. hence the defensiveness. like i said: i understood. it was so fucking rough. i did my best, but i am one person trying to work against a campaign of misinformation so vast that it fucking terrifies me. this kid is being set up for a life lived entirely inside the hall of mirrors

“History doesn’t repeat itself… but it slimes.”

Get Your War On, Comic 2, by David Rees. Panel 1: "Oh my God, this War On Terrorism is gonna rule! I can't wait until the war is over and there's no more terrorism!" Panel 2: "I know! Remember when the U.S. had a drug problem, and then we declared a War On Drugs, and now you can't buy drugs anymore? It'll be just like that!" Panel 3: "Right! God, if only that War On Drugs hadn't been so effective! I could really use some fucking marijuana right now!"

To recap the current situation: Obama cut a deal with Iran to limit their uranium enrichment. It worked.

Trump withdrew us from that deal. Iran restarted its nuclear weapons program leading to the point they got close enough to an A bomb that the Israelis attacked. Also, Trump is not up to the task of handling this and it probably wouldn’t be happening if his incompetent ass and administration weren’t in the White House.

If you're in the press and not connecting these simple dots, quit.

@glass Pre-WWDC I told a friend that I wished Apple would play into a singular dialed aesthetic like “very crisp off-white” or “very contrast OLED black”… rather than the rainbow color-tinting which makes for a lot of really gross combos. I did not expect them to do it, but land on “clear.” This just makes me wish for an ultra dark look.

VA workers are now free to decline to care for patients if they are unmarried or Democrats. Doctors and other medical staff can also be barred from working at VA hospitals based on their marital status, political party affiliation or union activity.

Tell me how this is fair, right, or American.

Folks on , I'm switching from iPhone to Pixel for a myriad of reasons these days. Trying to find app "homes" as I switch, that are a bit more secure and/or open source if possible. One I've not found yet is for Podcasts? I like PocketCasts but wanted to see if there are any lesser known alternatives?

If you want to know why a Democratic Senator and Representative in Minnesota were shot...
It might have something to do with the fact that their deaths would end the Democratic majorities in both chambers.

The image features a tweet discussing the potential motives behind the shootings of a Democratic senator and representative in Minnesota. It includes a graphic showing political group structures in the Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives, highlighting the number of seats held by the Democratic-Farmer Party being just one more than the Republican Party

I just watched Alex Padilla get thrown to the floor and cuffed after trying to ask Noam a question at a presser.

The Senate is meant to be only second to the House of Representatives in power in our system of Democracy. They are fewer, older, and meant to be the wise body of the government, serving longer than presidents, and running less often than reps.

If you're waiting for the sign that things have gone too far, it's passing you by.

America is neither safe nor free.

While performing official oversight duties, a Democratic senator was violently tackled and handcuffed by federal agents because he dared to ask a question.

This isn’t law enforcement. This is occupation. Sec. Noem made it crystal clear in her own words: She sees her mission as "liberating" Los Angeles from its own elected leaders and residents. That’s the language of an invader, not a public servant.

Sen. Padilla was doing his job by defending our democracy. (video via Bill Melugin/Fox News)
