So, a hypothetical situation for which I am soliciting feedback:

We are in some moderately populous city, for which there is - suddenly, unexpectedly - unreliable power and no network. Cellular, ISPs, those things stop. Power, it's maybe sporadic, DNS is gone.

There is some plausible critical mass of nerds who want to be useful, Lora mesh & let's go. We stand up a server.

What's on that server and why?

@Beedazzled
The most comfortable eyeglasses I've owned were titanium(!) Saddle-bridge glasses; sits on the top, boney part of your nose. So, light to start with, and no pressure on the sides of your nose.
Very hard to find. And probably not popular because they do sit closer to your eyes. And your eye lashes. So they require more frequent cleaning. And closer means smaller, so not enough space for proper progressives.

Does anyone know any good books on "Mutual Aid Project Management" or "Mutual Aid Group Dynamics" or "Anarchic Group Dynamics" etc?

My feet are dipped in the water and I'm starting to swim around without touching the bottom of the pool and I'd like to learn more and skill up now that I have familiarity with the subject.

This also impacts the way I build new software these days.

Inspired by a few observations:

- the only 'legacy" code I'm ever confident will compile out of the box are single Makefile projects written in C

- Most of the time, I don't want to write in C, so I opt for go.

- I'm not as confident in go's future, but go compiler builds are static artifacts, and dependencies can be vendored and are not hosted in a single monolithic service - so I have reasonable expectations of maintainability.

New Privacy Guides article 🌈💛
by me:

It's important to protect our data online, and this is doubly true for anyone in the queer community.

But protecting our data shouldn't mean staying isolated.

It can be difficult to find a balance,
but it is fundamental to stay connected with our communities.

There are tools and practices that can help us with this.

Stay safe 🔒
But stay connected :rainbow_heart:

Changing your filters in an astronomical image can change your view.
First image is M42 through standard RGB filters, showing what it would look like to the eye.
Second image through [OIII], H alpha, and [SII] filters mapped to the blue, green, and red channels. The colours show where those elements are in the nebula.

Hello, Albertans! The provincial government is attempting to limit access to material it calls "sexually explicit" in school libraries. Its examples are overwhelmingly LGBTQ+, which makes "sexually explicit" seem like coded anti-queer language. Their actions are consistent with queer book bans across the continent.

When I think back to the sexually explicit material that I had access to in school, their examples seem kind of tame to me! (QV: the works of Piers Anthony.) :P

Please take some time to fill out the government's survey on this topic. It may not change anything because we know what this government is like, but let's please not cede the floor entirely to the queer-phobes:

As Carl Hendrick argues for a return to 'deep reading':

'Reading, in the end, is an act of faith. Faith that other minds matter, that complexity deserves our patience, that truth emerges not from confirmation but from confrontation with difference.... To read deeply is to insist that some things, wisdom, empathy, the expansion of human understanding, cannot be optimised, only experienced'!

Reading can be (is) revolutionary!

If you believe in the future, stay away from AI.

At first you may feel like you've been left behind. Don't worry -- think, read, write, take time to develop your abilities.

Be present.

When the AI madness passes (yes, it will pass) your skills will be more valuable than ever.

I want to set up a hacking honeypot but instead of the usual jailed or fake shell it'll be an LLM that pretends to be a shell and is specifically ordered to slowly make the "system" being accessed stranger and more and more demented over time.
