Good news. A first step.
New (somewhat slow) *direct* train connection coming between Amsterdam and Hamburg 🚄

The messy implementation of Australia’s under 16 social media ban.
Demanding better, responsible, compliant social media platforms rather than a messy age limit is much needed.
Which many Australian colleagues have said, repeatedly.
Visa restrictions (H1B) for the US incoming if you worked on disinformation, content moderation, fact-checking or online safety 🤯
Not good… Rutger Bregman's BBC lecture about the ‘paralysing cowardice’, by fx universities, corporations and media networks bending the knee to authoritarianism is censored … out of fear for authoritarianism (and lawsuits)
Dutch public broadcaster NOS (finally) stops posting on X.
The disadvantages are seen as too big. The reach has dwindled.
In the category, 'better late than never': good choice.

All Dutch media united in urgent plea for information security and an integrated media and tech policy in the name of democracy.
US tech companies will not do this they argue. Rare, sector-wide, strongly worded call to prioritize this in new government negotiations.

I want this to happen. But as @jon says: “ultimately it’s not really a plan. It’s more like a kind of aspirational hopeful, ‘this is what we like to see.’”
It would be great with some courage, investment, and progress so that it would be more than hopes 🚆 🌈
It’s not easy to break free from deep dependencies. But it can be done. ICC to drop MS for German alternative ⬇️
Today is the day 🎁
The #dsa regime for researchers to get access to platform data to study societal impact and risks starts TODAY.
This has been a loooooong time coming. And the proof of the pudding will be in the eating …
Meta gets more time ⏲️
The Amsterdam Court grants Meta until December 31 to provide an algorithm free default option for users’ time line
Meta is now granted more time to fix things.
Meta appealed the original order but has to implement the changes before the appeal case.
Two members of Dutch Parliament from Wilders' PVV party created AI generated images of GL-PvdA party leader Timmermans and circulated these on social media.
Threats, death wishes and intimidation followed.
This shows how AI content can amplify existing rhetoric and emotions.
The @EUCommission preliminarily finds TikTok and Meta in breach of transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act.
The EC also finds that Meta and TikTok have put in place "burdensome procedures and tools for researchers to request access to public data."

The increase in science funding applications from 2023 to 2025 across programs is huge.
And most likely the competition will increase unless investments are made in science and research (which have repeatedly shown to pay off later for society at large).
AI chatbots offer vote advice ahead of elections. Unreliable, non-transparent. And are these applications high risk AI?
Dutch data protection authority warns voters not to rely on chatbots ahead of October 29 elections.
New versions of generative AI will continue to come. And Sora might carve out a new space for itself.
But the incoming #soraslop in existing spaces will be real.
