I've been exploring more of the alternative corners of the internet, since removing myself from the mainstream corporate social media platforms.
One area of the web is the Tildeverse; websites that capture the charm and wonder of the original Web 1.0. Plain text, gopher and gemini protocol websites, IRC channels, newsgroups, etc. The internet I grew up exploring is still out there and is being kept alive.
I've requested to join a couple of services on the Tildeverse and am waiting to hear back. They're run and moderated by volunteers and you have to be patient when requesting help. That's something we've all lost in the need-it-now internet culture.
Here's something I just discovered that was kind of neat-- a music composition service, that uses a point and click user interface. This isn't my creation, but it's a good example of some of the things that folks create: tinyurl.com/tildemusic
@growfediverse ... and now I'm falling down the Tildeverse rabbit hole.
HAAAaaaaallllllpppp...
I've created a new blog on the Gemini protocol: gemini://gemlog.blue/users/coolpuppy/
The Department of Government Efficiency is ransacking multiple federal agencies, without oversight or safeguards, and EFF is glad to join the brigade of lawsuits to protect this critical information. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/02/eff-sues-doge-and-office-personnel-management-halt-ransacking-federal-data
@growfediverse Oh, I'm already following @admin! ;)
I've got to get used to the decentralized nature of content discovery on the Fediverse. Bad habit carryover from the corporate social media platforms, I guess!
I know I can connect with my Bluesky and Mastodon accounts. Are there any Friendi.ca profiles I should also follow?
Wikipedia is rolling out anonymity features piloted in countries with authoritarian governments in the US & is making a change to not show editor IP addresses in response to a global "increase in threats" from Elon Musk, Heritage Foundation, and governments
Good Lord. As if Thiel and his AI billionaires weren't bad enough, now they say they have God on their side: prosperity theology meets #TESCREAL.

I'm happy that Bluesky is getting a lot of traction and drawing users away from X/Twitter. However, I know as it becomes more popular, the temptation to fill the algorithm full of ads will be very tempting.
I'm keeping a close eye on the Bluesky leadership team for any hints of opening up the system to more advertising. When that happens, I'm outta there and fully onto Mastodon here.
I highly recommend keeping your social media presence as diversified as possible and not to put all of your eggs in one basket. I also recommend not putting any content you would be heartbroken if you lost, onto social media in general. Keep that for your personal / portfolio sites.
@paul @Crell I think they'll first go after the liberal-minded Protestant sects, like UU, Church of Christ, etc. Then they'll turn their wrath to the Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.
They will cannibalize themselves eventually, as everyone else is not Christian enough and they will fight amongst themselves.
@QasimRashid I read that they're in the midst of electing their new DNC chair at a conference in Washington state, as the previous one is stepping down.
I'm not sure why that prevents the current representatives in Congress from stepping up and making some noise, though. There have been some notable exceptions, but for the most part, it's been pretty toothless.
Now's the time to dump corporate social media and to make the Fediverse and other services more valuable.
You need to contribute and share to these platforms in order for them to be more visible on the internet.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a declassified World War II-era CIA guide to sabotaging fascism in the workplace has become one of the most popular free ebooks on the internet:
