I long ago uninstalled Lagrange from my phone. Not because I don't like the app, it's fantastic, but my reasoning was that, if I am to engage with the smol web or whatever you wanna call it, it has to be an act with more purpose, something you do while sitting down in front of a pc, and you engage it only for a short while. If it's like "I'm bored, let's take out my phone every 5 minutes", then that's already against what the smol web is supposedly about I think?

BIG changes at the gopherhole today!! Following a conversation online I decided to make as much as possible of the gopher server accessible via the web. I wrote a Perl script 😁 to parse all the gophermaps and build index.html files for each directory. I wrestled with CSS to get it displaying properly on [most] devices: I hate CSS.

I then altered my nginx config to serve the new pages properly. Finally updated my gopher housekeeping scripts to handle the new stuff. I'll do a blog entry soon because the story that drove the change is quite interesting.

Gestern festgestellt: Nicht jeder Gopher-Client kann meine Gopher-Seiten korrekt anzeigen. Alte aus der ersten Hälfte der 90er nicht, und auch neuere nicht, die nur den ursprünglichen Funktionsumfang abbilden (ohne Erweiterungen wie PDF usw.).

Immerhin, der bei Ubuntu mitgelieferte Gopher-Client zeigt die Seiten korrekt an, ebenso Lynx. Und einige andere auch.

Konqueror sollte es mit dem KIO-Gopher-Plugin können, aber bei meinem Kubuntu 25.10 kann Konqueror trotz Plugin kein Gopher anzeigen.

@dammn I think you'll find that people moving to these protocols are doing so in part to distance themselves from moneymaking schemes, be they GAFAM or anyone else. Good luck!

@venelles thank you :-). I know the benefits, I can look up software (maybe write my own) ... Unfortunately the answer to my rant is simple: #gemini and #gopher does not make as much money as currently running #http / #web

#amfora and #gemini_protocol .. why don't people start using it more ? I know that the content is the problem but if no-one creates a content, this will never grow. I think the golden era of #gopher and other clean protocols should come back. No CSS, no animations, no spyware just a pure content. Doesn't this sound better than characterization of current WWW ? I'm going to start digging into server side ....

Meine erste Begegnung mit Gopher hatte ich, wie kann es anders sein, in OS/2 Warp. Allerdings hatte damals schon der Triumphzug des World Wide Web begonnen, sodass ich Gopher damals nur selten genutzt habe. OS/2 Warp brachte schließlich auch den Web Explorer mit und damit einen halbwegs brauchbaren Web-Browser (nicht zu vergleichen mit dem später erschienenen Netscape Communicator für OS/2, der wirklich gut war).
