Ex journalist now working in housing policy. Looking for better #democracy, better #cities, #Sacramento and #California politics, #transit, #climate, #housing, music, esp. postpunk, #newwave, college/community radio, etc. I used to worry that I was easily bored, but turns out I'm just easily interested. Not very technical, but curious about all the ActivityPub stuff and have some other accounts around the Fediverse. he/him/all y'all

@tito_swineflu Jesus. I read about lefties going to fight against Russia in Ukraine or against Assad in Kurdistan, and that makes sense. I can't get my head around anti-fascists fighting for Putin but I guess there's a lot I don't understand about the world.

Chock full of good info about #California #highspeedrail.
Do you like democracy and beer? Come to New Helvetia in #Sacramento on May 1 and help the ProRep Coalition and Better Ballot Sacramento build stronger democracy in #California! My intro to Pere Ubu was their performance of "Birdies" in "URGH!: A Music War". I was enthralled by Dave Thomas' weird, oddly gesticulative performance.
Then I heard Nonaligment Pact and noticed how different their synth sound was from so many other bands. Same vein as Devo and Wall of Voodoo. Just eerie sounds over a hard driving rock beat. Great stuff. Cleveland, man. Amazing place. I mean, Pere Ubu AND The Pretenders? 🤩
And then they had an actual hit! Here's DT doing his thing in this video they'd play on 120 Minutes. I remember hearing this on the radio.
RIP Dave Thomas 😔

Ugh. I may have to get on bluesky, at least for some stuff. I was trying to follow the action on #SB79 and some other housing bills today. Lots of people live posting the hearing over there today, legislators, advocates, etc. But it seems like just very few people here are tuned into #caleg or other stuff I want to follow. (Which makes sense, of course, given the different overall numbers of users.) I really like the everyday anarchism of the fediverse, but it can be hard sometimes.
@TheComfortableSpotPodcast I feel like the protests have been significant and growing. But beyond that it's not clear if that will work, or what to do. And directly defending ppl from being disappeared or other more direct action... it's hard to know when it's time, or where that goes.
@TheComfortableSpotPodcast Well I will say that a year ago I wouldn't have thought twice about answering this poll.
@orrickle I'm not sure. I'm not an expert but school districts may be among those with looser requirements? My understanding is SLA singles out transit agencies among "districts" because of the strong connection between housing and transpo, and this is a pretty big change. I'm just not just not sure what the argument is for that piece. We'll see how it goes, I'm sure there's a lot of negotiating to come!
@orrickle SLA requires generally that when public agencies want to dispose of property they have to offer to sell it first to affordable housing developers. There are lots exceptions and it varies depending on the type of agency, but this would basically exempt transit districts from that requirement. Arguably it could give transit districts more flexibility to do mixed use developments around stations, or sell off property to raise revenue. But weakening the SLA may cause heartburn for some houser groups who would otherwise be strong supporters. You may be right about how many parcels, I'm not sure how big the impact would be.

@orrickle The TOD provisions are very exciting. Worried about the provisions exempting transit districts from Surplus Land Act. Not sure why that needs to be in there?
#CaliforniaYIMBY Write your senator today for SB79. Here’s mine:
As a Berkeley resident of more than three decades’ standing, I am seeing our city and region hollow out due to the critical lack of housing affordable to middle and low income residents.
That means: teachers, city employees, service workers, health care service workers, skilled construction workers, gardeners, child care workers and the like. One recent morning, I saw a city sanitation worker driving down my block delivering new garbage cans: “It’s a nice cool day,” i said to them. “Not in Stockton,” they replied.
This is not sustainable. Soon we will have no one within driving distance to provide the necessary skills and services to make our city function.
Berkeley is the birthplace of this approach, the phrase “Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)” having been coined by famed city and regional planning thinker, UC Berkeley Professor Robert Cervero. It’s high time we put TOD to use.
Please vote YES on SB 79.
