It's 4th July. There's only one way to celebrate the day. By reading another blog about the same obscure 1980's British computer that I was banging on about last time.

It's Friday. It's 11 o'clock. You know what that means!

Another blog about an obscure British computer from the 1980's.

@kiwa I got the mahoosive monitor it goes with. This thing must weigh 40kg and could be used to demolish buildings...

My latest blog. A bit of a scatter gun of updates but real life keeps getting in the way of important retro computing things...

Phew! The thinnest wire I have (a tiny bit thicker than the original) used to replace the original fuse wire. Everything starts correctly now. The fuse was for the -12v line which I assume must have something to do with the CRT HV starting..

I'm not worried about the wire being a tiny bit thicker as I won't be blundering through there again in a hurry. And it really is only a fraction thicker.

Anyway, it works. ๐Ÿ˜

A crap night. While measuring voltage at a power connector on the Cifer 1887 I slipped, shorting GND to 12v very briefly. Just a spark but now it's completely dead, CRT and all. Got the PSU out and one of the fuses has blown. Not sure if that's all that's wrong. I frickin' hope so.

A closeup of a circuit board with two sets of metal posts. The nearest posts have the remains of a fuse wire attached with a small bit of wire on each post and a large gap between them. The back pair of posts have their fuse wire intact.Closeup of the back of a black power supply. The cables are connected via old fashioned screw terminals. The cables are different colours for the different voltage feeds.A closeup of two pieces of wire that could be used to replace the fuse wire. The top wire is much thicker than the bottom wire, which is barely thicker than a human hair.

It's Tuesday night. You know you want to read another blog about an obscure 1980's UK computer running CP/M.

Not quite on the same scale as launching a massive rocket and then catching the fiery end in the same spot, but I managed to get a Gotek working on my Cifer 1887. It's an obscure British computer from c.1984 that runs CP/M and, if I can fix it at some point, possibly Unix..

A computer with a small built in CRT stood on end with the top cover removed. High voltage warnings cover the CRT. A Gotek floppy drive emulator is connected at the bottom of the picture.A small dual-colour OLED display shows the disk name 'cifercpm1'. The display also shows track 2 of the disk image is being accessed.A small green CRT displays a message to press a key to boot. The display shows that the unit found a floppy at drive 0 and loaded CP/M version 1.3 for the Cifer. The small green CRT shows a file listing of the disk image from the connected Gotek drive.

Latest update on the Torch Triple X. An obscure British computer from the 1980's which ran Unix.

This time I make progress! Ooooh!

The #TorchTripleX is possessed, I'm sure of it. I've done NOTHING to it but now it's giving me a different error beep sequence. Short Long Short Short. That's not even in the freakin' manual!!

Arrrghhhh!!!!!

Iโ€™m an immigrant to Germany having moved here 14 years ago. I gained my citizenship in 2020. Most of my friends here are immigrants. My partner is an immigrant. Itโ€™s been truly frightening to hear the far-right planning mass deportations of naturalised citizens.

But 1.5 million people marched against that today. 350,000 demonstrated in alone. That gives me so much hope. Tolerant people are not a minority, and we wonโ€™t let them frame it that way. Never, ever again.

Now ban the AfD.

Anyone with an Epson PX8 should check out this project. It's to re-create a simple but very clever display adaptor for the PX8 (or PX4) based on the Oval Automation UD-80. It's not my project but I had a bit of a hand in kicking it off with my original UD-80.. ๐Ÿ˜
