From my reading of the dead test manual, this means the CPU is working OK, the SID is mostly working (it never played noise), the replacement PLA is fine ... but the VIC-II and MPU are suspect. The VIC-II does produce a raster with a border and center text area, but the center text area shows garbage.

Thoughts? I do have a working #C64 that I can conceivably pull a VIC-II or MPU from, maybe that's the next step.

So this #Commodore64 SX-64 definitely had a bad PLA; with the original PLA, the dead test cartridge does nothing discernible. With a replacement GAL PLA, it blanks the screen for ~10 seconds, then garbage appears on the screen, and eventually it plays scales on the SID -- but the screen never shows anything but various garbages.
