Last was a great pair of talks by @dj and Sile O'Modhrain on sound #accessibility and spatial literacy for #blind learners, respectively, at the #Michigan #AI Lab. These talks both show compelling new kinds of interfaces that I haven't thought about much before, highly recommend youtube.com/watch?v=ffCBcutulD (7/7) #HCI

I’ve joined University of Michigan’s School of Information (SI) as a courtesy professor. I’m pretty excited about this and look forward to increased collaboration between by home department of CSE and SI.

conferences should offer an extra-early bird registration rate available only prior to paper decisions coming out to appeal to the gamblers and over-confident 😂

One of the people who did the most to help make Twitter popular -- because his application made it better -- calls it quits after Musk and minions pulled the plug last week on him and many others. He sees great possibilities in the protocol underlying Mastodon, and I can't wait to see what he and people like him do to restore a truly decentralized web: mastodon.social/@chockenberry/

Seconded! This is also one of the favorite things I read in 2022.

Our current focus is on sound accessibility, with the goal of making sounds easily accessible to everyone, everywhere. This has broad implications for a wide range of users. 1/4

The most promising candidates will have knowledge to build usable HCI/applied ML systems & conduct end-to-end user research (formative, design, evaluation) with those systems. Our lab places emphasis on real-world deployments of systems & have released technologies publicly. 3/4

Consider, for example, technologies for hard of hearing users to easily understand conversations in noisy cafes, or for hearing users to easily hear doorbell over a vacuum cleaner running, or for noise sensitive groups to supress traffic sounds while walking on streets. 2/4

@cfiesler @jbigham @krischi Ah, so now there is one! Seems like you need the latest version of Discord to make it work? See: quora.com/Can-I-add-alt-text-t

@jbigham @cfiesler @krischi Yeah, among the recent tools we tried, I’ve found Discord to be arguably the most accessible software for virtual conference communication currently, but it does lack a11y when it comes to voice/audio based things (e.g., no captions, no alt text for images). For ASSETS, we disabled voice channels completely and encourage people to describe images by adding a follow-up text post. Not ideal, I know.

hi folks! Tomorrow 10-11am ET, Michael Nebeling is hosting an office hour for applicants in technical HCI. I'll be participating with @parastoo, @dj, and Amy Pavel. We'll discuss some of the questions that we've been compiling at: docs.google.com/document/d/1UJ

the range of research interests we span (words! sights! sounds! VR!) gives a good indication of our intended scope, so we're hoping the session will be helpful for lots of people interested in doing a PhD!
