I’ve joined University of Michigan’s School of Information (SI) as a courtesy professor. I’m pretty excited about this and look forward to increased collaboration between by home department of CSE and SI.

The most promising candidates will have knowledge to build usable HCI/applied ML systems & conduct end-to-end user research (formative, design, evaluation) with those systems. Our lab places emphasis on real-world deployments of systems & have released technologies publicly. 3/4

Consider, for example, technologies for hard of hearing users to easily understand conversations in noisy cafes, or for hearing users to easily hear doorbell over a vacuum cleaner running, or for noise sensitive groups to supress traffic sounds while walking on streets. 2/4

@jbigham @cfiesler @krischi Yeah, among the recent tools we tried, I’ve found Discord to be arguably the most accessible software for virtual conference communication currently, but it does lack a11y when it comes to voice/audio based things (e.g., no captions, no alt text for images). For ASSETS, we disabled voice channels completely and encourage people to describe images by adding a follow-up text post. Not ideal, I know.
