#rspatial not to over-complicate or anything. The specific issue is muparser in RTools. More generally, motivation is an example case for better understanding how R spatial community can provide feedback/support/contribute upstream regarding spatial libs in RTools. If you have advice or suggestions based on previous experience in this area, or other thoughts along those lines, please consider dropping a note in github.com/firelab/gdalraster/.

Heya R devs - did you know you can run all your favorite GitHub actions on Codeberg?

Codeberg is rolling out Forgejo actions - an (almost) drop-in replacement for GitHub actions, which means we can (almost) use `r-lib/actions` directly on a free and open source platform!

Just a couple tweaks are needed, and for your convenience I'm automatically mirroring r-lib/actions and applying those changes so they're ready to use.

The largest fundamental science agency in Europe will save €1.4 million annually by breaking free from Clavariate Analytics' commercial databases of references and citations.

Starting January 1st 2026, the CNRS will stop subscribing from the Web of Science, along with the Core Collection and Journal Citation Reports.

"We have worked for free to lock ourselves collectively into a paid system", one head of the CNRS explains - but no more! 🎉

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death John Fox this week. He was the author of numerous books on applied statistics and accompanying #RStats packages including car, effects, Rcmdr, ivreg, and matlib. John was a member of the R Foundation until 2023.

The deprecated macros ‘CHARACTER_DATA’ and ‘CHARACTER_POINTER’ now return ‘const’ pointers since using writable pointers in packages is not safe.

Day 5 of the #30DayMapChallenege! In which I attempt simple LiDAR processing for the first time using SedonaDB. Behold...a high-resolution elevation map of what's under my feet in my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Getting the data here is an example of where Arrow shines...we don't have a built-in LAS reader yet but we can patch one in using a dozen lines of Python. Code + walk through in comments! dewey.dunnington.ca/post/2025/

Next year's edition of the European Geosciences Union General Assembly (EGU26) in Vienna has a new session, dedicated to high-performance computation in the geosciences.

This session is for people working on software to solve larger problems and solve problems faster. It is fine for presenters in this session to get technical and show code. In fact, that is recommended!

New blog post! kylebarron.dev/blog/fast-pytho

This dives into performance pitfalls of Python bindings, why projects like Lonboard are so fast, and why I care about Apache Arrow so much. The post is high level and you don't need to know C/C++/Rust to understand it!
