Now is a great time to get into #homelab and #selfhost. Lots of fully working hardware has been abandoned thanks to #Microsoft and arbitrary #Windows 11 requirements and is available super cheap. Keep it out of the landfill and tinker and learn at the same time. Win-win!
A new episode of Downstream is live!
Netflix and Paramount continue their battle for Warner, why Ted Sarandos might not be the villain he's painted to be, plus letters and TV picks. (Downstream+ listeners also get: YouTube's letter, Oscar noms, Star Search, and Heated Rivalry.)
I have been waiting for the native spin of LMDE-XFCE, specifically the ARM64 variant. None of my powered on hardware is x64 anymore, so I am looking at what the next steps are for us ARM-heads.
@kejne single server. I have condensed everything down to one server, however, there are still 3 other servers on "cold standby". They are configured and ready to power on, but on a separate circuit that is physically powered off.
@Auli router/modem is from the ISP and I don’t count that in the lab. The lab only has one switch and yes, it’s on the same “kill a watt” power strip. I’ll have some pics and screenshots coming soon. It’s not your typical home lab so it will make more sense soon. My primary goal was low power draw. Everything else is secondary.
@dbtechyt definitely taking a look. I’ve been using portainer for a while but it feels lacking these days.
Finally got the power envelope under 25 watts for the entire #homelab. This project took a few weeks in my spare time, but rising electricity costs finally pissed me off enough.
#selfhosted #virtualization #container #linux #opensource #utm #debian #macos #das #powerconsumption
@mickgeek seems rational. I’ve gone back and forth on the DAS vs NAS thing and have finally settled on DAS for the foreseeable future. Main reason is to consolidate hardware to lower overall electricity usage. I’m now working to get it all under 25w at normal load. Idle should be around 12w.
@jongary it used to for sure. I’m not sure when the behavior changed but I ran into the rendering thing a few months back with a wipe/new install. It’s great that it can render but the default behavior should be to “text edit.”
A fond farewell to #Emby
Emby is like #Plex but just your media. Ive been a paying premier user for many years.
A few months ago, smart tvs decided they were gonna report everything you watch and sell it. (or worse)
Yes, yours too.
I decided to take my tvs off the web and created a local only network. My server talks to both local and web.
Now the Emby tv apps dont work even tho they dont need web. And thus my farewell.
Lookin like #Jellyfin install incoming.. was a good run Emby.
@yehor at least you’re setting a budget! This stuff can get out of hand quickly.
I’ve been brewing some ultra low power coolness in my home lab. I’ll be sharing it soon! Still working out some wrinkles but keeping the entire power envelope under 25 watts is rough. 🤣
#homelab #selfhost #linux #docker #orbstack #debian #opensource #electricity
I use both Jellyfin and Plex (Amp). Both work fine for that purpose.
This is both incredible and beautiful at the same time! Does he plan to do Helm's Deep? I have always said that the battle for Helm's Deep is hands-down the greatest battle scene in cinema ever. All these years later and that has not changed. Tell your dad I love his work!
With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:
1. Welcome!
2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.
3. Lots of people are willing to help.
4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.
5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.
Be patient.
@leigh deleted mine weeks ago. Will likely never reinstall.
You can go “goblin mode,” but I’m going to go “hobbit mode”: walking around barefoot in a comfortable home, eating more than three meals a day, splitting my time between tending my garden and writing, and occasionally getting pulled into an adventure by an old wizard.
@markhertling Realizing that there is far more in this world that we don’t know or understand than we do is the first step to becoming a leader. It is also the first step in understanding our humanity.
@shantini it’s like the adult table at TG. I appreciate that aspect of it.
