Alcohol & Fats
It’s a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British and Americans. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
Conclusion: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."

If Steve breaks into Joe's home and kills arbitrary members of the household and then when asked why says "well, I had a feeling Steve was going to break into my home and do the same sometime like within a year or more", we do not call that "self-defense", we call that murder.

It does not matter which one it is, we can not regress to letting States just invade and kill hundreds, thousands or more people, further devastate the lives of very many times that, just because the rulers of some State decided they have a feeling.

Even within this current deficient States-based system, that is actually not allowed, but we have during the latest 1½ or so decade had the major powers (UNSC veto holders, Napoleon era "Great Powers" imperialist shits) actively dismantle the protections against wars of aggression because those were done by their buddies or themselves.

With the removal of that protection, we go back to the constant continents-spanning devastation of the Hundred Years' Wars (1337-1453=116 years and 1689-1815=126 years), Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and so on, with 10-40% (depending on war, 40% for the 30 Years one) of the people killed for rulers' whims, totaling in today's population of same areas 74 million people... but now they have worse weapons, nukes.

We can't go back to that.

I have these two sentences stuck in my head these days:

A French minister: we need to prepare ourselves for a future when temperatures are 4°C higher.

A climate scientist: with a rise of 4°C above pre-industrial age, up to 90% of the world's population may die.

(edit: muting the post, it's going way beyond its intended audience, I'd like to be able to see notifications about other things. thanks you all for sharing)

6 ways AI can partner with us in creative inquiry, inspired by media theorist Marshall McLuhan theconversation.com/6-ways-ai-

«McLuhan argued that far from making the liberal arts obsolete, automation makes them mandatory. In an age where machine intelligence is integrated into communication and creativity, the humanities, with their focus on cultural understanding, ethical reasoning and imaginative expression, become more essential than ever.»

@HannahHowe Likely everyone will vote for the decade their own musical taste was formed — I know I did. I was 14 when the 80s started, 24 when they ended. I still love so much music from that decade. And today I even like some of the stuff I couldn’t stand back then…

Freedom Flotilla Coalition's crew on the Madleen sailing to break Israel's illegal siege against the people in the Gaza Strip of Palestine, ~1h ago:
─────
Israel’s Defense Minister has once again threatened unlawful force against civilians, attempting to justify violence with baseless smears. We will not be intimidated.

The 'Madleen' is a peaceful civilian vessel, unarmed and sailing in international waters with humanitarian aid and human rights defenders. This mission is independent, guided only by conscience and solidarity with Gaza.

We are currently about 160 nautical miles from Gaza. Earlier signal jamming briefly disrupted our location, but our tracker is functioning again.

We remain calm and prepared in the face of possible Israeli aggression.

We call on world governments to demand Israel stand down. It has no right to obstruct our mission or enforce its illegal and brutal blockade.

The Israeli government is issuing threats against the Madleen, a small ship carrying food and medical supplies to Gaza, along with a dozen activists, including Greta Thunberg. Israeli authorities said that if the small ship attempts to deliver the desperately needed aid to Gaza, it will come under attack.

A small ship, representing the Madleen, is seen approaching the coast of Gaza with a box labelled "humanitarian aid" on its deck. A large Israeli soldier stands over Gaza, aiming a rifle at it. He looks over his shoulder at the ship and says, "Come any closer and you're next!"
