Wait, how doe this solve anything, except making the journal less accessible to readers? ... 😑
"To make JOM a journal accessible to everyone working in the optical microsystems field, we have thus decided to shift from Gold Open Access to hybrid open access, starting in 2025. Authors will now have a choice: publish for free under access control, or pay the APC, in which case the article is Gold Open Access and free to read for everyone."

‘We’re losing decades of our life to this illness’: long Covid patients on the fear of being forgotten
by Kathryn Bromwich
"Even though we are seeing fewer headlines about long Covid, previously healthy people are still contracting it, with each successive infection increasing the risk. “We sometimes will see someone who’s had Covid one, two or three times without problems, and then on the fourth time, suddenly they’ve got long Covid, and that makes them ill for a long time,” says Heightman." ...
Peter Barr explains why three UK #universities recently cancelled their #Elsevier #ReadAndPublish agreements and why these deals are unsustainable.

PS: My own objections to these deals overlap significantly with Barr's. See the #BOAI20 Recommendation 4 ("Move away from read-and-publish agreements").

Given the state of the world these days, it's probably about time we revisit the European alternatives to software and services from the American "defacto world monopolies" like #Microsoft, #Google, #Amazon, etc...
Why?
Because we can't afford to trust a spoiled brat who's just one "national security" excuse away from accessing whatever he wants, while also forcing these companies to stfu about it...
Never a bad time to create your own piece of the web.
