@anubis2814 Covid spreads year round. It is estimated that 400 Million people are dealing with Long Covid in some form. People are getting (re)infected with Covid in the present tense. People are developing Long Covid in the present tense. Asymptomatic infection is a thing. You have no idea who is infected and who is vulnerable at any given moment. Consider updating your risk analysis.

@anubis2814

Not sure where you're getting the fear aspect from? All of the people who are still masking - myself included - aren't doing so out of fear: but from one or a mix of things, including community care; ensuring their chronic illness doesn't worsen; taking practical steps to avoid chronic illness; avoiding many of the still getting researched knock-on effects of covid; protecting their children; projecting an unwell loved one and also just enjoying not being sick with *anything*

We've done our risk analysis and decided that wearing a mask is akin to wearing shoes and it doesn't bother us at all.

Also - I'm in Australia and we have a few waves a year still, and we had a massive flu season over Christmas. It's summer here then.

Some highlights from @ducky 's weekly roundup covidbc.webfoot.com/2026/02/28

Natal health:

babies who had been exposed to COVID-19 in the womb had double the risk of birth defects compared to babies with no COVID-19 exposure, and triple the risk of cardiovascular system malformations

Sleep disturbances:

COVID-19 infections increase the risk of new-onset obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) diagnoses. Compared to COVID-negative controls, [...] non-hospitalized patients had a 33% higher risk.

Kidney disease: influenza didn't detectably increase kidney disease, but

people who got COVID-19 infections had:

  • +174% higher risk of acute kidney injury (AKI);
  • +39% higher risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD);
  • +222% higher risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD);
  • +28% higher risk of glomerular diseases.

More evidence that fewer infections is better:

among people over 55, those who had a COVID-19 reinfection were three times as likely to get a new diagnosis of osteoporosis as those with one infection

Treatment of acute cases:

[people] who got Paxlovid after a COVID-19 infection had 5% fewer sick days, 17% fewer short-term disability days, and 27% fewer long-term disability days than people who did not get Paxlovid

And bearing in mind the difficulty in reporting cases in the last 18 months or so, that isn’t good

I was hopeful because it looked like someone at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had managed to keep the RESP-NET data updated with #COVID #flu and #RSV hospitalizations, but they haven't updated since January.

I wish I could say #NYC was better at providing #COVID19 #Wastewater data for timely warning of new outbreaks, but the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene only updates the city's Open Data portal once a month.

Pleased to see folks in their teens and 30s masked today. Not many, but any are welcome.

There is a very slight uptick in #flu and #RSV cases in #NYC, which may indicate that we're going to have a relatively rare double wave this #FluSeason, but it's still less than 1% of hospitalizations.

#COVIDIsNotOver but #COVID cases are at some of the lowest levels since the virus emerged, and there were 30 deaths in the four weeks ending February 7.

You can help prevent a second wave of #influenza and #RSVirus if you #WearAMask on elevators, trains, buses, doctors' offices and supermarkets!

Any .au folks have experience with Ausair Airflex masks? On the positive side, they're claiming kn95 certification, on the down side, they're on half price sale, which is worrying insofar as it suggests they might have wound down production, and maybe the filters will cease availability.

Need something a bit more convenient / quick doffable for outdoors / crowds than my 3M Auras.

Tested my new Zimi for the first time. Such a comfy mask. And after a long fit-testing session yesterday I felt very safe. #SaltingTheVibes #CovidIsNotOver
