Q for #OpenAccess people
Has anyone ever tried to streamline to process of seeking permission for a use that is *not* permitted by the work's CC license?
Strawberries coming along nicely. We are looking at how coloured films affect the behaviour and health of managed #pollinators in #fruit crops, in the hope of improving outcomes for both bees and crop in protected fruit systems.
We have been monitoring #bee activity on the crops. Over the next few weeks we will be harvesting and assessing #strawberry fruit to see how the films affect plant development.
Supported by #BBSRC, The East Malling Trust, and also partnering with Clock House Farm, Buzzup, and Biobest.
We have new releases of vcflib and freebayes with an improved and flexible guix.scm that can build debug, static binaries and CPU optimized editions! Very useful and easy to deal with dependencies. E.g. https://github.com/freebayes/freebayes/blob/master/guix.scm

"And it came to me that I had no idea at all of what was really happening, or of what was supposed to happen. And that was the nature of my game, because I’d spent most of my life as a blind receptacle to be filled with other people’s knowledge and then drained, spouting synthetic languages I’d never understand. A very technical boy. Sure."
William Gibson, Johnny Mnemonic

@cwebber @nyxie as one of the robots in above photo: those visors are self built. this one has posted a lot about this and also wrote a post about building its visor: https://999eagle.moe/posts/visor
additionally, unit Δ-44203 wrote its own guide and has some more information on why, available here: https://query.44203.online/topic/visor/
I wish there was something that worked like Airtable (easy to use and configure for non-technical users) but was end to end encrypted by default.
@tamara missed seeing this on your list! Guess there's a few spoilers in that article so I'll look for the books first 😀

Lazyweb, a hypothetical: if we create a license today that sets out to do what the GPL intended but IMO largely failed to do - that is, keep the power of computation in the hands of the people and the collective good - what would that license look like? Knowing what we've learned in the last 40 years, that purist permissive licenses are a path to capture and human rights, dignity and safety are more important than the text of the program, what does that licensing regime look like?
I wrote a thing for @thetransmitter. The attack on scientific infrastructure happening in the US shows that relying on any one country is not a good option for science. We need to start supporting and building international, decentralised infrastructure for science.
