For anyone using variable fonts in Affinity design apps:
⚠️ BEWARE ⚠️

Affinity applies kerning values from a variable font’s default instance (usually a moderate “Regular” style) to *all* variants of that font, even if it includes design variants with drastically different kerning.

It’s easy to miss in variable fonts with relatively limited stylistic ranges (where kerning doesn’t change much throughout), but it’s quite problematic for variable fonts that cover more expansive ranges of variation.

Expected behavior versus current behavior for kerning within Affinity apps is demonstrated with samples of “AV” glyph pairs across a variable font’s range of width variants.

On the left, the expected behavior is that kerning values should change between all of a variable font’s variants. The widest variant kerns the AV pair -140 units, the default variant -100, and the most condensed variant only -20.

On the right, the actual current behavior is that the AV pairs for *all* the variants are kerned the default -100 units. This means the wider variants aren’t kerned enough, while the more condensed variants are kerned too much – to the point that the glyphs eventually collide with each other.

Look here. This is a method to make smooth and continuous non-orthogonal designspaces. In this example: 4 masters "on the outside" and 3 floating intermediates. (The shapes are from MutatorSans and only illustrate the extent of influence.) #interpolation #experimental #designspace #math #somethingnew

… And a recreation of the “DO IT FOR YOUR HEART” button using the new Casserole Classic typeface (with a modified and rotated ornament from the font for a heart). 😘

A quick new post at @FontsInUse featuring Davida Bold to celebrate both Valentine’s Day and @ohno’s new Casserole type family – a “resuscitation” of Davida that was just released yesterday.

Continuing on the theme of #accessible #typography; this is a pretty good blogpost discussing some relevant topics. Of the default fonts I would argue Lucida Sans and Georgia are among the most reliable alternatives. gathercontent.com/blog/what-ma

We have been working with Robofont and Glyphs at the studio for a while, but I still use Metrics Machine for Kerning despite what design software I’m using. I wonder what other colleagues are doing? #kerning
