Inventing the Renaissance isn’t *about* LGBTQIA+ history, but it’s still a queer history because *any* history of *any topic* can help battle erasure, so long as we take the simple step of pausing to mention the diversity already present in all our histories. adapalmer.com/publication/inve 24/24

American studies degrees are declining in popularity – but the subject has never been more important

theconversation.com/american-s

[one factor in me not continuing was lack of support. and with the academic job market what it is - uber but for undereducated high school students who want to get business degrees - there's no way i would consider going back]

I am going to be adding a variation on a "warrant canary" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_) to the syllabus for any classes that I teach. For example:

"I have _not_ been directed by the university, government, or any other organization to add, alter, or remove any portion of this course. Watch closely for if this notice is ever removed."

If/when institutions try to control what we teach, they may try to prevent sharing details of the ratfuckery that's happening

Vale Fredric Jameson

“The great philosopher and critic Fredric Jameson died today, at the age of ninety. His writings, almost impossibly voluminous and still growing year by year, accomplish a magnificent balancing act between intellectual rigor on the one hand and aesthetic perception on the other; a strong political commitment undergirds the whole…” therestisnoise.com/2024/09/for

Kinda sucks that I just learned of James C. Scott's passing today, but I'm passing on an interview link shared on twt.

@rowensnyder conducted an extensive interview with James C. Scott in 2001. It helps us understand Scott as a person and a scholar.👇'

Peasants, Power, and the Art of Resistance
James C. Scott, a Southeast Asianist by training, has made seminal contri-
butions to the study of culture and politics and is widely known for his
original ideas about how subaltern groups, especially peasants in develop-
ing countries, resist domination. He played a leading role in the Perestroika
movement in American political science.

Scott’s early research focused on the ideology of political elites, the sub-
ject of his first book, Political Ideology in Malaysia (1968), and on corrup-
tion and clientelism, which he addressed in Comparative Political Corruption
(1972a) and in several influential articles. His subsequent research on peas-
ants and agrarian class relations, published in The Moral Economy of the
Peasant (1976), explained peasant rebellion as a consequence of risk-averse
behavior by peasants in the face of the breakdown of patron-client relation-
ships. This book was widely read together with Samuel Popkin’s The Ra-
tional Peasant (1979), giving rise to the so-called Scott-Popkin debate that
pitted Scott’s emphasis on ‘‘moral economy’’ against Popkin’s ‘‘rational
choice/political economy’’ perspective.
Scott deepened his knowledge about peasants by doing two years of
ethnographic fieldwork on class relations in a Malaysian village. The result
of this research, Weapons of the Weak (1985), demonstrated that subordi-
nate groups engaged in what Scott called ‘‘everyday resistance’’ to author-
ity.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen multiple examples of women on the political right straddling two kinds of womanhood: the girlboss and the tradwife. The visibility of these women exposes a hidden link between conservative womanhood and girlboss feminism that deserves our attention.
