Today marks the 20th anniversary of me arriving in Germany with my parents. If they hadn't abandoned their jobs, friends and family and taken me out of Russia, I might very well have perished by now.

"Research from cities with established cycling infrastructure—like Copenhagen and Amsterdam—shows that increasing cycling actually reduces car traffic, easing congestion for everyone."

I'm always dumbfounded when people say this as if it's a surprise. What did they expect to happen when alternatives to single-passenger automobiles, the sole cause of traffic congestion & gridlock, are made accessible? Transit too, whom many rely on even when it hasn't been made reliable.

#DonaldTrump is entering his second term with vows to cut a vast array of #government services and a radical plan to do so. Rather than relying on his party’s control of #Congress to trim the budget, #Trump and his advisers intend to test an obscure legal theory holding that presidents have sweeping power to withhold funding from programs they dislike.

Just going to leave this here, again. And it’s important to remember the U.S. isn’t the only country being targeted.

Sure wish I could say I don’t see these kinds of things being spread in the Fediverse, especially since the great Twitter migration, but I do see them each and every day.

The New York Times is giving a murder their “both-sides” treatment. What the hell is the matter with you?!? Someone kills a person with their car, and your reaction is to be like, “Some people think murder is bad, but others don’t like bike lanes, so 🤷‍♂️.”

Death of Cyclist in Paris Lays Bare Divide in Mayor’s War Against Cars
Paul Varry was run over on a city street in what prosecutors suspect was a deliberate act of road rage, as bikers and drivers choose sides. It sent a shock through Paris, a city striving to transform itself into one of the great cycling metropolises in the world: a bicycle rider, crushed under the wheels of an SUV in a bike lane just a few yards from La Madeleine, the landmark neoclassical church, in what prosecutors suspect was a deliberate act of road rage.

A murder investigation has been opened, and last week, Mayor Anne Hidalgo led the Paris City Council in a minute of silence for the cyclist, Paul Varry, a 27-year-old who was also a cycling advocate. Ms. Hidalgo, a member of the Socialist Party, delivered an emotional speech in which she signaled she would continue to roll out her famously aggressive policies that aim to drastically reduce the role of the automobile in Parisian life.

“I am truly angry,” she said. “The future does not belong to cars.”An outpouring of emotion over Mr. Varry’s Oct. 15 death has put a spotlight on the dangers facing cyclists in a city that has seen an explosion in bikes and cycling lanes in recent years. But it has also underscored the frustrations that motorists increasingly feel in a place that has chosen to limit the movement, speed and parking options of cars.

In recent weeks, as cycling organizations, spurred by the death of Mr. Varry, have demanded more protections from aggressive drivers, others have complained about Parisian bikers themselves, some of whom have earned a reputation as dangerous risk-takers.

The mother of Donald Trump's pick for Secretary of Defense wrote to her son in 2018 and said this:

“On behalf of all the women (and I know it's many) you have abused in some way, I say... get some help and take an honest look at yourself... I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, and sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years).”

Serial abusers stick together.

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential.

I'm more than a little concerned that the recent election is going to pull a lot more people into investing in cryptocurrency -- most of whom probably are nowhere near as savvy as they need to be to avoid getting fleeced by scammers. I hear constantly from people who poured their savings or kids' college fund into crypto, only to see it all stolen when they clicked the wrong button or link.

You know what the typical answer is from the feds? We're drowning here. Just too many cases. These thefts are often $500K or more, and the frequency of them is rapidly increasing the monetary loss thresholds that would normally get law enforcement's attention.

Also, tons of people are now pouring money into the market, which is already vastly overpriced by almost any measure. Here are some sage words from a WSJ story today about how "investors are betting on a market melt-up:"

"One measure closely tracked by investors, the equity risk premium—or the gap between the S&P 500’s earnings yield and that of 10-year Treasurys—shrank close to zero, the lowest level since 2002, according to Dow Jones Market Data. That means the reward for owning stocks over bonds is dwindling."

“The market is awfully expensive to have a melt-up,” said Rob Arnott, the founder and chairman of Research Affiliates."

November 17, 2017 – The FCC announced it would repeal 42-year-old regulations that limited media mergers and prevented media conglomerates from growing too powerful. The repeal came at a convenient time for the Sinclair Broadcast Group, a conservative pro-Trump media group that is already the largest broadcasting company in America.

Sinclair had been trying to buy Tribune Media for some time, but, in order to do so under FCC law, would need to divest a sizable share of its local news channels. With the FCC’s update to Ownership regulations, Sinclair’s hurdles disappeared. As of August, Sinclair’s television broadcasts already reached 72 percent of American homes.
