Today would have been my sister's 37th birthday.

Sadly she passed away in June 2023 from secondary breast cancer.

This last year has been pretty tough to say the least.

This is just a grumpy ramble. Nothing will change.

Time to look for a new flat I guess.

Though I'll calm down and email them with a counter offer first. They won't like the email I've penned in my head so far.

All sorts of 1st world problems of course, I know.

But this is an issue in academia that's so easily ignored & silenced.

It's made worse by Oxford being the 2nd most expensive city to live in the UK.

The university is slowly completing a pay review, but it's really too late.

I've lived in 12 different houses since 2002, making an average of 1.8 years in any of them.

The longest being 6 years in one and four years here.

I'm fed up of moving.

This year has been awful, I won't go into why here, but now needing to deal with this, I'm fed up.

£185 increase or 11.56% making it a balmy 55% of my salary.

That's £1600 for a 50m^2, two bedroom flat in Oxford.

Just where the F do Letting Agents get off.

This situation is untenable. Oxford and postdoctoral salary do not work.

Sennheiser makes headphones. Some of its models are very pricy, and others are cheaper. This is a common tactic for firms, selling products at multiple “price points” so it can capture revenue from people willing to pay at different levels.

It’s apparently not very cost effective to make all sorts of different models. But then how do you justify selling headphones at different prices? Why would someone pay hundreds more for the same headphones?

Why, just make one version *shittier.* Turns out Sennheiser was inserting a piece of foam into some of its headphones, to deliberately lower the sound quality, in order to sell the same headphones at different prices to different people.

Once you recognize sabotage for what it is, you can’t help but start to see it in every aspect of your life: a deliberate shittiness imposed on us so someone else can earn a profit.
