We all agreed.

(On re-reading, the above sounds overly dramatic. It really wasn't. I just got chokey and teary, kids continued reading and let me be. It was fine, and that led to a little chat about how they need to expand their reading to cover various genres, some books might make them FEEL.
Overall good lesson, covered all the literary aspects, craft etc. And then followed open discussion about crying, toxic masculinity and stupid societal no-nos. +

Okay, today I properly cried in class while reading Oscar Wilde's 'The Happy Prince' in Grade 9. I mean, I just suddenly found it terribly sad to the point that the tears were rolling down my face. I let the kids continue reading, some looked at me in alarm, some kids were moved to tears as well and others began being mindful of just how terribly heartbreaking the story is.
Followed to healthy discussion about crying being okay when needed, about books, movies, music etc. that made them cry 😭.
