I overslept an _hour_ this morning. I'm glad I set my alarm very early because we were still able to get out of the house without panicing.

First year chem is reviewing for a test over the periodic table tomorrow.

Second year chem is using the PhET atomic interactions simulation to learn the basics of bond length, bond order, and introduce molecular orbitals.

I really enjoy #teaching #podcasting at the #university level, though you wouldn’t know it when I’m grading.

But I stayed focused #today, and was able to grade and give specific, detailed suggestions on ways to improve 15 pilot episodes.

That’s the final project in the bag! I’ll have a few extra credit assignments to grade tomorrow, but that’s easy.

Looking forward to doing it again in the Spring!

Microsoft #Onenote seems like a very good electronic whiteboard tool for teaching until you want to save the course notes locally. As a student you have to print each presentation individually to PDF and can’t export the thing as one document. So each class across a 16 week semester is a separate pdf doc without context. What a stupid oversight.

I had considered using it for teaching but the student experience is garbage. What’s a good electronic whiteboard board for #Teaching that are able to be used I. A more thoughtful manner.

Too busy to finish #adventofcode part 2 today. Instead I’ve been teaching and answering student questions about issues in implementing hash tables.

Also I’ve been working on a tool that generates simple random graphs (the data structure) and does random searches (breadth / depth first and Dijkstra’s shortest path) with results.

I’ll then use those to generate GraphViz images and exam questions on graph algorithms. The course has ~300 students so it’s good to have a large set of exam questions to randomly select for each student… next step is to do the same for binary search tree and hashtables…

Today in the classroom:

First year chem is making observations of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. I don't love the lab, but it is what it is.

Second year chem is finishing some lab analysis and then working on Lewis structures using resonance and formal charge to determine best structures for compounds.

As a teacher of AI engineers, I mostly agree with the points that Prof. Purser makes in their article. Really, it is the critical thinking itself that is at stake, when AI is adapted for education. That holds even for AI engineers (incl. my students), as they cannot meet the learning outcomes of STEM studies without also making mistakes. Now in the age of AI, the mistakes become systemic; in maths, coding, and in the STEM education as a whole.
