I'm a climbing coach and instructor, both indoors and out. When I'm not teaching people how not to hurt themselves when falling off walls (and occasionally how to fall off walls less), I try to spend as much time as possible attempting not to fall of walls myself... Or more ideally cliffs of various descriptions.

@jay_climbs If nothing else, sticking that dyno a few more times will make you better at the next one you come across 😀

@jay_climbs Nice send! Looks like a fun bloc... Also looks like a good one to do again and see if you can find different and/or better beta.

Had to resort to plan B for #climbing today and return to this crag. The one we originally wanted to go to was way overcrowded.

A small climbing crag with multiple climbers active on the wall. A small group of people is sitting in the grass at the base of the rock face, watching the climbers.A climber on the wall, locking off his left arm while reaching up towards a small hold. He's protected by a top-rope.

@ives Oh, how sad for you! 🤣 That looks like a goood crag!

One of the cruxes on the Liberty Bell route. The chockstone gets in the way, so you have to transition around the side of it in order to get around it. It protects well enough, and there's good holds. It's just awkward. I was happy to do this one as a follower :D The first picture is how not to go about it. Instead, you have to go in the crack higher, until you can get a foot on top

@ThWilma Enquiring minds now want to know what was so un-zen about Zen...🤣

@ives You could be right, but I think it's an angle thing... The video was taken from a ways to the side. Nasty move for the grade, though!

It wasn't all sunshine and sends in Nice... There was quite a lot of rain and whips too. The one had something to do with the other because damp limestone can be a little slick, though the reasons also included grade sandbagging, fatigue and just plain sucking. Anyway, I thought I'd post a little compilation of Nice whips because who doesn't like a bit of schadenfreude?
Thanks to Roy and particularly Alesia for not dropping me!

This one's just for Helen Finn, who has been complaining I haven't posted it yet.
Helen reckons my music choice for my videos is "a bit dodgy"... So, at the very end of the Nice trip with the ultra-patient Alesia offering a final belay before we headed to the airport, Helen decided to sit, watch, and provide her own soundtrack by playing songs off her phone next to the camera. These are all the songs she chose, roughly when she chose them, edited with a bit of fiddlyness to try and keep a 15 minute+ climb down to a vaguely sensible time and still capture Helen's... wit.

All over the place with my posts; this is back to the last day, and this one is right next to l'Attrappe Rêve (my last post) on the "La Dalle à l'Oiseau" sector of the crag that went the day before. Did this one directly after les Gauchistes (posted a couple weeks ago) - theoretically the easier route. This was a pretty nice route and @Alesia, after giving me a solid belay made a really fine go of it, too. I'm pretty sure she'll agree this was definitely not the harder route!

In climbing the route, Raboutou becomes the first woman to climb a route at 9b+, marking the first time that a new grade has been broken into within women's sport climbing since Angela Eiter's ascent of La Planta de Shiva in 2017.

"Boundary Corner" is a 3*** classic at Great Wanney. I think you can safely say it's a high-value V-Diff, so I just hope the photo captures some of the burly awkwardness of the thing!! 🤣 I backed off it a couple of years ago, but with a decent sized cam (a no. 5 DMM Dragon) to protect the crux, it's actually not too bad. Amazing line and a nice belay tucked in behind that wedged boulder. #Climbing #TradClimbing #Northumberland

@Dino_w Mantle? Wow! That seems WAY too much effort! Me I might have gone for the smear instead, but the heelhook is fairly elegant.

@Dino_w Like the interesting heelhook beta. 😎

I was kinda hoping the impromptu nap while waiting for the rain to pass might wake up my brain after a rather slow Sunday, but when the sun finally came out said brain was more reluctant. Got a couple fun routes in, though, took a whip on a third, then came to this nice line at the end of the day, aided by the patient and excellent Alesia on belay. Let's see if I can locate the light switch...

Excellent weather for #climbing yesterday in one of the most beautiful areas of #Belgium, near the French border.
This crag is a bit weird, it's basically a hole in the ground somewhere in a forest (see last picture). It's again an old quarry; this one with near vertical walls with some relief for feet and small cracks and holes for handholds.
Really nice and quiet spot that's well bolted and has holds that haven't been polished like some other crags here.

Two vertical rock walls, about 50m apart. One bathed in sunlight, the other in the shadow. Trees are growing on top of the walls and a nice blooming tree can be seen at the end of the hole bounded by the walls.A person climbing the sunlit wall from the previous picture, seen from below. A rope attached to bolts via quickdraw leads up to the person.
The wall is full of small dimples and some trees and a blue sky can be seen at the top.A similar view of the sunlit wall as in the first picture, but from another angle.
In the middle of the wall there's a 8 by 8m cutout where a large beam-shaped part of the rock has been quarried. The sides of the cutout are lined with vertical cracks that can be used to climb.A Google Maps view of a forest with a rectangular black hole in the middle.

Nice (well La Turbie in this case) was a fun place to climb; most of the routes had interesting moves on them - even the "easy" ones, the company was good, and the weather (when it was climbable at all) was lovely (especially considering the forecast just a day before the trip!). The extra excitements of the rock being generally damp, polished, and my mojo having been washed away by alchohol and rain on Saturday night meant a slow start and not pushing too much so it's probably just as well the "easy" routes were fun! Finally found a little flow late on Monday, so this Tuesday climb was a bit better. Still, this little beauty was a fine example of the grading at the crag; poor technique aside, this felt around a full letter grade harder than advertised!
