Letโ€™s be very clear: Los Angeles is the perfect place for this to play out for the Trumpists. The Trumpists hate California and hate Los Angeles and a vast amount of their base feels the same โ€” even the Trumpists here, who wallow in hating the place they live. /1

@RSNStats it sounded very weird on the radio. Leaned right and it was to his left?

Despite the rainy weather (it was the 12th weekend in a row with rain here in New England), we got some work done in the garden and made a run to Loweโ€™s for plants. Hopefully, it will ease up enough to get them in #today, but tomorrow promises to be good weather anyway.

The image shows a blue hand truck loaded with various potted plants and gardening supplies. In the foreground, there is a bright green plant with large, broad leaves, possibly a Heuchera, alongside a plant with smaller, dark green leaves and pink flowers, possibly a Geranium. A white watering jug with a blue cap is placed on the blue hand truck. In the background, there are bags of soil labeled "PROS CHOOSE LESCO" and "Vermiculite," indicating a gardening or nursery setting. The plants are arranged in a way that showcases their foliage and flowers, with the blue hand truck providing a stable base for the display.

I will never get over how much more my professional judgement is questioned now that people know me as a woman vs back when they thought I was a dude.

Hearing about it is one thing. Experiencing it is quite another.

Fuck the patriarchy.

Really enjoyed David Gerard's amusing take on how programming with AI becomes like a gambling addiction for many.

"Large language models work the same way as a carnival psychic. Chatbots look smart by the Barnum Effect โ€” which is where you read whatโ€™s actually a generic statement about people and you take it as being personally about you. The only intelligence there is yours."

"With ChatGPT, Sam Altman hit upon a way to use the Hook Model with a text generator. The unreliability and hallucinations themselves are the hook โ€” the intermittent reward, to keep the user running prompts and hoping theyโ€™ll get a win this time."

"This is why you see previously normal techies start evangelising AI coding on LinkedIn or Hacker News like they saw a glimpse of God and theyโ€™ll keep paying for the chatbot tokens until they can just see a glimpse of Him again. And you have to as well. This is why they act like they joined a cult. Send โ€™em a copy of this post."

#Today is a busy day. I dropped my wife off to get her hair done, and now I'm heading to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. After that, it's back to Safelite. I hope they have all the parts to replace my cracked windshield on the EV6 this time. The crack is creeping across the windshield and has nearly reached the driver's side.

@RSNStats that was an amazing baseball game! It seemed like every time I look up the score would change, but the Red Sox were still down by one. But they pulled it out in the end for a change.

Arc's farewell post makes me grateful for new ventures like Good Internet Magazine and the folks repping personal websites. The picture they paint is bleak & corporate, and I hate to imagine that my posts would only ever be consumed by LLMs and summarized for people to read through an intermediary chat interface: "Webpages wonโ€™t be the primary interface anymore... increasingly, webpages โ€” apps, articles, and files โ€” will become tool calls with AI chat interfaces"

A couple of days back I hatted Phineas snoozing on the sofa. This is him with his pack hike tribe that he goes with once a week. How utterly adorable are they?! @jdarnold

A photo of 5 dogs, all sitting together for a group photo in a woodland setting. There are two wee terrier types at the front, and 3 larger behind, and they look very happy to be there. They each wear a hat, a couple of fedora types, a couple of summer straw boaters and a cloth summer hat.

Isnโ€™t it amazing that when you call a place for an update on a part that they promised to contact you when it gets inโ€”it should always have been brought in just that morningโ€”and theyโ€™re ready to schedule you? I must be so lucky to call on the very day the part finally arrived. ๐Ÿ˜ก

It was also a busy week in the #SaltLine, at least on one of the projects. I finally got the first pass of using the Clang tools to do my AST diffs, and itโ€™s working pretty well. I have lots of cleanup, but Iโ€™m happy with the results. My progress with the Clang tooling has not been very good for the other project. I need to focus on that other project this week.

I have been playing many computer games over the past few days. I broke out my Asus ROG Ally and played many different games. I even fired up the Xbox to play some games. I am enjoying the remastered Oblivion, the Elder Scrolls game I have played the furthest in the past. I might have gotten as far as 1/3 done in that game. Starting over with the remastered one, though, which seems silly given the length of these Elder Scrolls games. I also finally beat the first boss in Gears Tactics.

The weather looks good for the next few days this week, but rain is predicted for the weekend. I need to look it up again, but last I heard, we'd had eight of the last nine Saturdays with measurable rain. I will take the dogs for a long walk in the Fells #Today, which will improve everybody's attitude. I spent much time cleaning up outside yesterday and have much more to do today. The pool is ready for swimming, although the saltwater conversion won't be for a few weeks.
