VLT (FORS2 I guess) observations (~2h sequence) of ~40-100 meter wide asteroid #2024YR4 that hopefully won't hit Earth on 22 December 2032. To the best of the community's knowledge Today, it's a ~1% chance and that will be refined as observations go.

Pretty cool

don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone, don't look at your phone..

It's hard but Yesterday I did look at my phone, news, too much and my energy level went to zero.

At 6pm I will be presenting a hyperwall talk about the Roman Coronagraph #AAS245

The skies of Chile’s Atacama Desert, renowned as the darkest and clearest of the world, are now at risk from an industrial megaproject.

Electricity company AES Andes proposed to locate a large-scale industrial complex just a few kilometres away from our Paranal Observatory. If constructed, the resulting dust emissions, increased atmospheric turbulence, and especially light #pollution, would irreparably impact the capabilities for astronomical observation.

We urge the involved parties, specifically AES Andes, to work with the Government of #Chile to relocate this megaproject to a zone compatible with industrial development without jeopardising the skies of Paranal.

Unlike in 2024 I won't be offering a topic this year but this is really a unique program for students in astrophysics, data science, software engineering, instrument calibration and support, and public outreach / scientific writing.

Check out the SASP @spacetelescope and apply!

#JWST #Coronagraph discovered and photographed a NEW, MATURE #exoplanet , about 6x the mass of Jupiter and ~5-10º C in famous, nearby Epsilon Indi system, 12 light-years away!

MIRI is so sensitive, almost unfair 😱, the planet was visible in the VLT/NEAR data but unclaimed in Pathak et al. 2021

Exoplanet Imaging alert. AF Lep b! What’s remarkable is that this is a high contrast detection of a 3 Jupiter-mass exoplanet with JWST/NIRCam at 1.8 lambda/D (0.32") for a Lyot coronagraph that was designed to operate at 6 lambda/D (inner-working angle). I was contact scientist for this one and helped in designing these challenging observations. The data were reduced and post-processed by William Balmer, a JHU Grad Student in our group @stsci, amazing job!

JWST Cycle 3 outcome: I am excited to be part of several very very cool projects, sad for other projects but these will eventually pass.

I am especially excited because some of the accepted proposals I am involved with aim at finding new planets in direct imaging!!!

The NASA/ESA/CSA JWST launch was an abstract thing of the future, something that we were working towards but we weren't exactly sure about because of the many subsystems and hardware we, as astronomers had absolutely no control over.

Now a thing of the past, 2 years already! Wow, it's been so worth it to change job, learn space astronomy and missions, move country yet again 6.5 years ago. #JWST delivers and delivers and it's a pleasure to help making that happen.

A recent article in La Repubblica beautifully described ESO's Extremely Large #Telescope as "a gigantic egg, laid by who knows what mythological bird, on the highest peak" and it's a very accurate metaphor!
