@hacks4pancakes When vendors would spam email me asking if I had time to schedule a quick call about their product, I would send them back this New Yorker cartoon. Most of the time that was the last I heard from them, but one time a guy sent me back this meme. Got a good laugh out of that one.

Man at a desk on the phone saying "No, Thursday's out. How about never - is never good for you?"So you're telling me there's a chance

#CyberSecurity #Scams: "You may have arrived at this post because you received an email with an attached PDF from a purported hacker who is demanding payment or else they will send compromising information—such as pictures sexual in nature—to all your friends and family. You’re searching for what to do in this frightening situation, and how to respond to an apparently personalized threat that even includes your actual “LastNameFirstName.pdf” and a picture of your house.

Don’t panic. Contrary to the claims in your email, you probably haven't been hacked (or at least, that's not what prompted that email). This is merely a new variation on an old scam —actually, a whole category of scams called "sextortion." This is a type of online phishing that is targeting people around the world and preying on digital-age fears. It generally uses publicly available information or information from data breaches, not information obtained from hacking the recipients of the emails specifically, and therefore it is very unlikely the sender has any "incriminating" photos or has actually hacked your accounts or devices."

There is a remarkable experiment where they got people to describe a totally false memory by showing them a photo they didn't remember mixed in with photos from childhood. The subject swore up and down the memory was real.

Sane people. And not people trying to lie either.

Really the "Satanic Panic" is another example of this. Memories are fragile things in some ways.

Yes, all true and valid. And sure greed is one driving force for many #security issues.
But she neglects the BACKDOORS implanted deliberately!
Each and every US company will have received a NSL, take that for granted. There are by far too many "forgotten" hardcoded admin credentials and other faults clearly intended as backdoors.
But to address this issue is clearly off-limits.

With adults I need to tell them "this person uses they/them" and happily most of the people I know get that. But, with younger people they will pick it up from the context cue of me using "them" more than once to refer to the person.

Frankly IDK if I'd always pick that up but my point is it ain't that hard and the people who whine about having to think about pronouns or be told about pronouns wouldn't have to think so much if they just got used to the fact that some people are nonbinary.

"Scammers Target Desperate EV Drivers with Fraudulent QR Codes

Fake QR codes direct EV drivers to a malicious site when all they want is to charge their car."

by Dan Carney, Senior Editor
September 9, 2024

"[S]cammers are replacing the EV charging networks’ QR codes with their own, directing these unsuspecting victims to their own malicious site. Once there, drivers enter their credit card information in a bid to pay for a charge, only to have the scammers steal that information for misuse.
...
'Quishing, or QR phishing, is a cybersecurity threat in which attackers use QR codes to redirect victims to malicious websites or prompt them to download harmful content,' explains security specialist company Cloudflare."
