Dan KB6NU

Long-time ham, CW operator, #hamradio blogger (KB6NU.Com), author of the "No Nonsense" amateur radio license study guides. I used to be:

- Communications Manager for Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC),
- Freelance writer and editor,
- Website developer,
- Technical Editor for Test&Measurement World magazine,
- Electronics test engineer.

I enjoy all kinds of #hamradio activities, but my favorite thing to do is operate CW, Second would be teaching ham classes.

#ARRL is no longer worthy of your trust.

It's not malice, it's sheer incompetence. The Board needs to resign, en masse, after firing the paid staff. Or at least fire the $350k/yr "CEO" - they may need to leave a message for him as he's likely out showing houses.

Go to arrl.org, log in using the poorly-implemented "personify go" interface, go to your settings, and delete any "saved credit cards" you may have there.

@N4JAW I got to the park a little after 1 pm and made 41 CW contacts in an hour and 45 minutes.

2025-06-12

Just worked the four #POTA stations on 40-meter CW. #hamraddio

@N4JAW Going out tomorrow morning with a couple of ham friends. I hope the bands are as good tomorrow.

@KI7CFO I think either antenna should work pretty well. For POTA, I use a 66-ft. doublet, operated as an inverted V, fed with 300-ohm twin lead. I'm running 15 W from a KX3, and I make lots of contacts.

@arth QSYed to 40 meters and made two contacts on my first two CQs. Go figure.

2025-06-09

@arth 30 meters is dead, even though I'm getting decent spots on RBN and the German RTTY station, DDK9, is relatively strong here.

Learned about the defunct Monitoring Times magazine recently. I really like Publisher Bob Grove’s All About Antennas collection. Lots of practical and specific advice useful for new hams. Like this, about operating inside and losses due to particular sources and materials. monitoringtimes.com/antennaboo

A graphic shows shorter wavelength signal penetrating a window pane better. Transcription follows. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and the easier it is for a signal to get through an opening in an absorptive or reflective enclosure.
Nearby trees, buildings and hills take their toll, too. Locating an antenna inside a large building with steel frame and metal reinforcements may attenuate signals up to 25 dB at VHF and UHF, according to one study. Brick walls, slate or tile roofs can account for 6 dB, even more when wet. Shorter wavelengths
900 MHz) get through small windows in shielded walls where longer wavelengths (150 MHz) do not.

@HopelessDemigod @VE2UWY Well, you only had 8 replies, and I would have voted Icom had I seen this earlier.

@rose_alibi I love saving plants like that. Nice work!

@n8dmt @NO5IG Every three or four years, someone comes out with a "revolutionary" antenna design, but for some reason they never seem to gain any traction, aside perhaps, for some very niche application. This seems like that kind of thing to me.

@HopelessDemigod @N1ZZZ @HopelessDemigod @N1ZZZ I've gotten maybe a half dozen QSLs like that one. Honestly, I just ignore these email QSLs from QSLWLD.Com. My opinion is that if they really wanted a QSL, they would send me a real QSL card.

@NilaJones @W6KME @Geojoek @bitsplusatoms Don't feel bad about that at all. I'd guess that at least half of the questions you can only get right if you memorize the answer.

2025-06-06

@w7voa I heard that this library will be home to both of the books he's read.

@W6KME @Geojoek @bitsplusatoms Same here. When I teach a Tech class, I tell the students when a question is out-of-date or just silly. The problem, as I see it, is that the two or three hams at the NCVEC that actually write the questions don't really want to give up the power, but they either don't have the time to do it right or don't have the capability of doing it right.

@tsherrygeo What would be some good pun names? One that just occurred to me is "Hallowed Grounds."
