I don't see any of you keyboard warriors on the talking a big game promoting going out and enlisting to save us from like my grandfather did for you.

I don't see any of you working in a factory supporting a war effort to save us here including my grandmother who spooled wire for communications gear used by troops coming to your rescue in .

What do i see? People who talk a lot, from behind keyboards, blaming but not doing much of anything to help us.

I hear people talk here daily about how we need to rise up and fight heavily armed feds with violence, that isn't enough to combat . You put all of this on us, the people who for the most part by and large, are unarmed in many cases. Even armed, you call for us to march to our deaths with violence against the system.

You speak as if you've done this yourselves to defeat fascism.

Let me remind you, my family and many like mine helped you in .

Going through my things last night, I came across a booklet that my grandfather gave me when I was young. A man who, incidentally, was awarded a bronze star for valor in the fight against fascism in WWII.

I don't know how I managed to hold on to it all these years. I've misplaced and forgotten so many other treasures. But, looking at it now, I'm grateful that I did.

The book is "I am an American: What Every Citizen Should Know" Compiled and edited by Francis Cavanah and Lloyd E. Smith. Published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin 1940.

It includes the complete texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and it's amendments (up to the 21st), excerpts from the Monroe Doctrine, and various quotes and letters from prominent (albeit mostly white) historical figures, along with some musings on the nature of citizenship and civic duty and other miscellany.

A cursory internet search reveals that I am not alone in having a grandparent bestow this gift. There are a few other, similar accounts, and some copies available on etsy and ebay. But, I was unable to find a digital copy.

I'm contemplating risking damage to the spine in order to scan and upload the contents. If there's enough interest in such an endeavor, I'll do it. Thanks to my uncle's generosity, I have quite a few other mementoes with which to remember grandpa.

A scan of the cover of well worn a pocket-sized booklet. The top half of the cover is red with the title, in a gold serif font, "I Am an American." The bottom half of the cover is blue with a subtitle in gold block letters, "WHAT EVERY CITIZEN SHOULD KNOW." In the center is an black and white line drawing of a spread eagle, facing to the right with several arrows held in its talons. The spine of the booklet is gold and quite worn. There are multiple creases and tears in the cover, showing it's age. It remains mostly intact, however.A scan of the back cover of a small booklet. The back cover is blue with a pair of gold lines across the top and another pair of gold lines at the bottom. The remainder of the cover is taken up with a quote in white text:

The Strength of a nation is measured by the united strength of each individual citizen. The citizen is strong when he loves his country profoundly and has confidence that it will afford opportunity for him to provide happiness and prosperity for his family and himself.
This confidence is strong and enduring when the individual feels that the doors
of opportunity are always wide open to give his ability and ambition a chance to manifest itself, and to provide suitable rewards.
The myriad of small businesses, found wherever people live, are typical of American ideals, and provide opportunity for thee individual. The maintenance of this heritage of individual opportunity is worthy of supreme sacrifice.

I'm recommending this #educational & #historical #documentary series.

[ On 8 May 2025, the world marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Allied victory brought an end to Adolf Hitler's 12-year rule. Journal entries from Hitler's supporters and opponents offer insight into life in #Nazi #Germany.

This four-part documentary series centers on eight individuals and their families. Each kept a #diary recording their daily lives, experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Illustrations accompany the entries to bring them to life, giving these sequences the look of a graphic novel.

The eight diarists lived scattered across Germany. They came from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and #political factions. Some become fervent supporters of the Nazi regime, others opposed it, and some were marginalized or persecuted. Several of the journal span the entire 12 years of #Hitler 's rule. But some fall silent after a given time. "Hitler's Reich - A German Journal" features no expert testimonies; instead, the #diaries stand alone, as personal records of the time in which they were written.

In the entries, we find descriptions of moments of happiness, youth, dance lessons, longing and love; but also of the first - still hesitant - Nazi salute, #Gestapo surveillance, "Aryan certificates," hunger, and the threat of deportation. They capture a time when many looked the other way, remained silent, or became complicit. They speak of what it felt like when the war "came home," the fear of nights spent in bunkers, and the hope of survival. The diarists wrote with the urgency of the present, not knowing what tomorrow would bring. Their stories reflect the rise, reign, and eventual downfall of the Nazi regime.

The Imperial Japanese Navy light cruiser Ōyodo was designed as a submarine flotilla flagship. Instead, she served as an escort, transport, and fleet support vessel throughout much of her career. In October 1944 she participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño as part of the Northern Force. She was sunk at Kure in July 1945. destinationsjourney.com/histor #MaritimeHistory #NavalHistory #IJN #ImperialJapaneseNavy #Ōyodo #lightcruiser #cruiser #WorldWarTwo #WW2 #WWII #SecondWorldWar

Ōyodo was conceived as a submarine flotilla flagship and long-range reconnaissance cruiser, intended to coordinate submarine operations across the Pacific. Her design prioritised speed, endurance, and command facilities over heavy armament. Her main battery consisted of six 155 mm Type 3 guns mounted in two triple turrets forward, supplemented by eight 100 mm dual-purpose guns amidships for anti-aircraft defence.
By the time Ōyodo entered service, Japanese naval strategy had changed dramatically. Submarine operations no longer held the central importance envisaged before the war, while carrier aviation had assumed the primary reconnaissance role. As a result, Ōyodo never fulfilled her original mission. Instead, she served as an escort, transport, and fleet support vessel throughout much of her career. In October 1944 she participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño as part of the Northern Force during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, screening Japanese carriers in a diversionary role against U.S. forces.
Ōyodo spent her final months largely immobilised at Kure. During heavy US carrier air attacks in late July 1945, she was struck by multiple bombs, capsized in shallow water, and sank on 28 July 1945 with significant loss of life.

From our 21st-century point of view, it is hard to imagine #WWII without the United States as a major participant. Before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, however, Americans were seriously divided.

Jan 30 1941 #WWII NYT The results, according to Dr. George Gallup, the institute's director, show that the negotiated peace idea is shared by only a small minority, approximately one voter in every seven. An analysis of the reasons why most American voters oppose negotiated peace between Germany and England shows two main attitudes that Germany 'must be stopped now,' and that a peace made with Hitler would not last 'because his pledge is worthless.'
