Whenever people complain about their favorite intellectual property from their childhood becoming “woke” it’s usually because it simply went over their heads as kids.

Around the age of twenty-two I realized that my worldview had been deeply imbued with pessimism and cynicism. It was the culture I grew up in. A hostility to new ideas, to anything that strays from the norm. An assumption that if things can go wrong, they will go wrong — that malice is pervasive.

One day, I decided to become an optimist and life became much more fun.

The life of a pessimist is easy but dreary. The life of an optimist is hard but exciting. Pessimism is easy because it costs nothing. Optimism is hard because it must be constantly reaffirmed. In the face of a hostile, cynical world, it takes effort to show that positivity has merit. To be an optimist, adopt these assumptions:

1. The future can be great
2. People’s intentions are mostly good
3. Ideas are fragile and need nurturing

Every new idea is an unrealized dream. Dreams are delicate and easy to destroy. When an idea presents itself, try to imagine the best version of it — what would make this idea great?

Pessimism and optimism share a trait: both are self-fulfilling. Your intention influences the outcome. Call it karma or, simply, effort. I would rather inhabit a future that has the possibility of being great.

Only optimists can create a great future. Only optimists can imagine it. Only optimists will put in the effort to make it. If you want to create a great future, believe it can happen. Choose optimism.

I was friends with some folks who contributed to a very popular open source project / website about 20 years ago. They noted that the founder, someone I look up to, didn’t really code.

That same founder subsequently wrote software that transformed the web, many times. He’s a stronger technologist than most people will ever be. He’s a phenomenal coder.

But coding is often not the skill project owners need to focus on. Execution is about strategy and community building, not programming.

I think I'm still in recovery from learning a few weeks ago that Canadian fossil fuel companies tell people that because it's "natural" gas that they produce, burning it can't hurt the environment. And people believe them. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, remember that and 🤯🤯🤯🤯

here is a picture of me doing my first ever zine signing at strange loop

it was so nice to meet everyone! I was very tired at the end, very impressed with authors who do these all the time

person with curly hair in a yellow shirt sitting at a table and smiling, with stacks of the “bite size bash” zine on the right, one copy of every zine she’s published on the left, and a wooden box displaying zines

My brother-in-law got his first EV (ID.4) as a company car. After a couple hundred kilometers, the car shows an average consumption of roughly 17 kWh / 100 km. Ok, but what’s that in liters, he asked? Not super scientific, but according to the energy value of fuel it’s roughly 2 liters.

We need a lot more translation help with old mental models. The translation and conversion might not always be 100% correct, but it’s not like our old models were always publishable in Nature either.

OK, good for them, but I'm far less excited by an electric Lambo than an electric car for $20K. Or, you know, zero-emissions buses that work as part of a functional integrated public transit system. You're right, that does sound like science fiction. #Technology theverge.com/2023/8/15/2383327
