๐Ÿ’ก Had a great discussions with @malvikasharan Sharan from The Alan Turing Institute about #collaborating on skills development! She leads The Turing Way initiative, which collects and develops #knowledge and training materials to help #researchers and #practitioners work in an open source way. Looking forward to exploring ways in how we can collaborate through #EOSA. ๐Ÿค

You can find @malvikasharan tomorrow at #FOSDEM BoF 10:00am in room H3242 (BoF track B). She's keen for everyone to participate and give their opinion!
You can also read the @turingway chapter on this topic. And give a follow to them both!

What a great talk to finish the session!

@malvikasharan Do not harm means taking a step back to consider if the work that you are doing can possibly be significantly harming a community or an individual.

Looking at literature, Malvika discovered Do Not Harm is actually compatible with open models, but there are some known harms of #data and #tech

@malvikasharan Malvika stumbled upon the Do Not Harm project a few years ago and was suprised to see that there were no direct links to #opensource and #openscience.

I received some end-of-year gifts from @turingway!

Stickers, a personalised post card, and these brilliant Turing Way socks!

Gifts arranged on a duvet cover. There is a postcard with Christmas themed illustrations which run reads "Happy holidays from all of use at The Turing Way". Underneath are three hexagonal stickers for open research projects. At the top and right are a pair of socks patterned with The Turing Way logo and colours.

Our wonderful @malvikasharan is live at State of Open Con now!

She shared the difficulties (and possibilities) of collaboration for open science, the geographic biases that inform how AI is made (and the open source contributions that bely this work), and then how 'Do No Harm' can be used as a framework to support inclusive technology development.

Learn more about her talk here: stateofopencon.com/schedule202

Malvika is standing in front of a room (wearing a grey blazer), holding a microphone and looking towards a screen that has the text: "'Why consider "Do No Harm" in open source. The answers include points from "uneven distribution & access to resources, hidden infrastructure of care work, evolving skill landscape, concentration of power, labour exploitation, language & cultural barriers, threats of tech and data misuse, language & culture barriers, knowledge gaps, unfair incentives, poor governance and lack of diverse leaders, funding/investment landscape, economic uncertainty"Malvika is standing in front of a room (wearing a grey blazer), holding a microphone and looking towards a screen that has the text: "'First, do no harm' principle from medical and healthcare context. ๐Ÿ“ข We are so excited to announce that The Turing Way now has its own Github organisation! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿชฉ๐ŸŽŠ

This past year, it became clear that our global community needed more space to collaborate, experiment, translate & localise, maintain infrastructure, and make our growing list of resources and projects accessible and centralised in one place.

In May 2023, a significant milestone was reached as The Carpentries transitioned all 43 of its official lessons to a new lesson infrastructure, The Carpentries Workbench. The Carpentries Workbench was a 3-year project led by @zkamvar with input and contributions from many community members.

We asked Jennifer Stubbs @malvikasharan, @fmic_, Eric Jankowski, @lgatto and @csoneson for their reflections on the project, its impact, and on Zhianโ€™s leadership: carpentries.org/blog/2023/08/c

Happy birthday to science fiction and horror writer and original badass goth girl MARY SHELLEY, born OTD in 1797.

Generative AI is a big challenge for open data - I've reconsidered sharing my own stuff.

Creative Commons are asking people to get involved in the wider 'beyond copyright' issues.

'Though using CC licenses and legal tools for training data and works produced by generative AI may address some legal uncertainty, it does not solve all the ethical concerns raised, which go far beyond copyright โ€” involving issues of privacy, consent, bias, economic impacts, and access to and control over technology, among other things.
...
For many creators, these and other issues may be a reason not to share their works at all under any terms, not just via CC licensing. CC wants AI to augment and support commons, not detract from it, and we want to see solutions to these concerns to avoid AI turning creators away from contributing to the commons altogether.'

Definitely do not go to these websites to get free study books. Also, don't go to 12ft.io/ to unlock paywalls.

libgen.is, pk1lib.org, ethos.bl.uk, sabaq.pk, sci-hub.se, archive.org, lej4learning.com.pk, pdfdrive.com, unpaywall.org

Once again, i DO NOT recommend students go to libgen (dot) rs and download books for their upcoming courses. i am NOT advocating for getting and sharing free pdfs of required texts. DON'T DO IT.Avoid them as much as possible, the links go:

libgen.is

pk1lib.org

ethos.bl.uk

sabaq.pk

sci-hub.se

archive.org

lej4learning.com.pk

pdfdrive.comYou also definitely don't want to be installing the unpaywall.org chrome extension. After all, who needs a super handy #openaccess tool that allows you, with a click of a button, to access any closed article?i also HATE this website archive.org, i do not recommend!! Definitely don't use email generators to โ€œborrowโ€ books from there

To clarify...because each email is linked to a set number of books, do NOT use guerrillamail.com to generate unlimited emails for unlimited books?
