Pictures from the center of Bristol, New Hampshire, in late February 2018. I like the small river, once important, I'm assuming, as a power source for milling grain or sawing lumber. And there are the abutting or nearby clapboard and brick buildings. #NewHampshire

Black and white photo: hall full of women of various ages wrapping presents for the soldiers' parcels. Their faces are not quite clear because of the exposure time required.

1915 panoramic view of the town of #Mariampol (now #Marijampolė in modern-day #Lithuania) on a postcard for German consumption. (The caption refers to "the eastern theater of war.") My German-speaking great grandfather left there in 1900, followed by his wife and their first four children in 1906. (The father had returned a couple times, judging by their young ages.) Somewhere I have a picture of him and his brother as conscripts in the tsar's army from before their emigration.

The postcard shows a medium-sized town, not a city or a village. The earth is flat here, and the buildings appear to be no more than two stories high.

Superior Viaduct, Cleveland, Ohio. I have no information to go with this postcard, but it attracted me because it would have been from the time when my great grandmother immigrated to the city with four kids, joining her husband and having another two soon after, the youngest of them my grandmother. The smoke, exhaust, and haze in this picture are quite something, by the way, as this was decades before the Clean Air Act.

Electric streetcars and a couple carriages or cars on the viaduct. Looks pre-World War One. Buildings and water towers in the hazy background.

Painting of middled-aged African American woman in blue, seated at a table doing her writing lessons, many years of experience clearly visible on her face. The wall behind her is yellow.

World War I poster advertising savings stamps for the war effort to a clearly immigrant population. Source of the image: https://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2002712000/. Brief analysis: https://markstoneman.com/2017/06/25/encouraging-immigrants-to-buy-in-to-the-war-effort/

Caption at top of poster: "Buy United States Government War Savings Stamps." Caption at bottom: Your money back with interest from the United States Treasury." The poster seems to target urban, working-class immigrants. There is the varied dress (indicating different national origins) of the men and women waiting in line at a kiosk to lend Uncle Sam some money. And there is the American flag held by the child, whose enthusiasm attracts the attention of the adults around her.

1853 map for German-speaking emigrants. I published a little blog post on this at the beginning of the year at Migrant Knowledge. The post includes a link to the high resolution version at the Library of Congress. See https://migrantknowledge.org/2022/01/30/an-1853-map-for-german-speaking-emigrants/.
