Nice thoughtful article on modern literacies

"The choice isn’t between books and screens. The choice is between intentional design and profitable chaos. Between habitats that cultivate human potential and platforms that extract human attention"

I was SHOCKED when I found out that this is true and it's been well studied. I was browsing #ProjectGutenberg looking for tasty things, and found a translation of Beowulf I had not seen. And it said this is appropriate for the 7th grade. And I'm like "unless you're a freak like me, you don't do Beowulf unless you are in an AP English program in high school" But, a typical 7th grader should be able to read and understand Beowulf. Most people don't even get the movie. #literacy #books

Building a strong foundation for literacy starts with engagement and joy. 🏛️📝

I’m sharing a lovely new piece by Danna Southwell: "Beginner Reading for Kindergarten Children: Bertha’s Story." It is a straightforward, humanized look at how to introduce young children to the mechanics of reading through relatable characters and simple narratives. A great resource for educators and caregivers alike.

"In our school, campus, and public materials are selected by trained professionals who understand child development and community needs. H.R. #7661 isn’t fundamentally about protecting kids. It’s about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on our shelves."

Go to your local public library and get your library card. Even if you don't plan on using it, the fact that you have it helps their registration numbers for budget allocation.

3 Mar 'On what are you unwilling to compromise?'

In my novels it has to be British English, and delivered the way that Miss Wilson taught us in the 1970s . I may not have liked her much, but she was right! Even about befrazzlement.

Befrazzlement?

extract from book 1 of 6

SlenderWolf Conflicts and Alliances

Chapter Chapter 25
Jackanory Square

“Good to see you Benet!”

“Dan! How are you?”

“I’m fine, how are you?”

“Frazzled. As usual!”

That’s Benet’s standard response. On a good day he’s frazzled, and on a bad day he’s double plus frazzled. It’s only when story time is over that he lightens up. If anything doesn’t go quite right he always blames his old frazzled brain. If it all goes well, he’ll claim to have succeeded, in spite of his befrazzlement.

According to Benet, that’s a genuine English word! If he’s challenged he just says, “well it is now! The English language is fluid you know! Always changing!”

A watercolour painting of a 40 year old hobo with long, dark hair, a beard, and a scruffy appearance. A wandering story teller, he sleeps in the woods at night. He is wearing a grubby wolfskin jacket over an old grey T shirt. In spite of his rough looks and shabby clothes Benet is one of Wolfland's nicest characters. The image is labelled Benet.

More from Sarah in our fictional space , The safety of a queer space:

I couldn't sing in front of him, Sarah said. Isn't that a strange thing to notice about yourself? She wasn't asking them. She was turning it over in her own hands. I'd be in the car with my child and we'd belt out everything—AJR, Barenaked Ladies, Dave Matthews, CCR, Queen—windows down, voices embarrassing—and then if he was in the car I'd go completely quiet.

@GrahamDowns Possibly, the reasons of such behaviour are described in this blogpost: fireborn.mataroa.blog/blog/the

Big tech invested a lot to make people illiterate and unable to ask help from another people. If at 90s someone met a requirement "open the console and run this command to make XYZ", in the README, then (s)he perform this action because (s)he knows how the things work. Or ask some friends — definitely there will be some nerd, sleeping with "K&R C" under the pillow 😃

Then nowadays, possibly the mostly expected scenario — well-learned behaviour — a lot of ramblings in the so-called "social networks" about how programmers "gatekeeping" users from using the programs 🤷‍♂️
