@CatDragon

I believe you are right.
So many things in the garden now will either wait
or wait until spring.

Cave Painting

(Nimue) Sometimes there is nothing sensible to be done And so you turn to magic, to poetry, ritual and rhyme Sometimes what you do is gather up art supplies Torches, provisions and then you walk into darkness Climb, scramble, make impossible journeys Into the most preposterous places where light Does not normally venture and there, there In the places of deepest darkness you set down…

@Nimue_B You've captured something that sings to my present moment in this poem. Thank you for sharing. May your cave be warm and dry and creative over the coming months of wintering.

I really can't be doing with "This person did this amazing thing... what's YOUR excuse?" posts

Not sure who needs to hear this, but you don't NEED 'an excuse'

It isn't wrong to not be hugely successful

Choosing not to sacrifice all your time and energy for things other people think of as life goals is not a failing

You're not at fault for functioning within the limits of your situation

And no amount of judgemental bullying disguised as 'inspiration' will change that.

@suethomas I will do...if I remember! And don't get distracted by doing other things.

@Hesperalis

I usually grow Kew Blue for eating and Canadian Wonder, cannelloni, borlotti and calypso beans for podding and drying. Last year I grew Trail of Tears and Blue Lake too.

I don't think you can ever grow too many beans. They're great for seed saving and sharing too if you have more than you can eat.

@chrisamaphone That's really beautiful. I used a scrap of birch bark that I found drifting in the road recently to write a quotation on. It's a surprisingly useful medium.

@suethomas

I did something today that I haven't done for eighteen years. I visited LinguaMOO.

It was all still there, exactly as I last saw it. And it was such a remarkable thing that I had to share the information with someone who would understand how strange that might be.

I am still wrapping my head around it all, in fact.

@OrbitalGardens Silly me! Yes, of course I could have. Thanks for the reminder...and for the reboost.

My tiny story from the anthology Fuel featured on the BBC Upload programme last night. You can listen via the Sounds player online: (~20 mins in) bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0dyqcbx

Just one more day to go before the book is launched, to raise funds to fight #FuelPoverty in the UK. Pay-as-you-can tickets for the online launch are still available.

The anthology contains 75 prize-winning flash fictions from authors around the world: taniahershman.com/wp/fuelflash

@OrbitalGardens Thanks! Although it turns out that it was on the radio last night. So I've got to delete this post and start all over again!

Please don't spray
or pull spring
dandelions!
They are one

@tinkerworm I have done so a few times. If I go along I try to take my collection of spare yarn and buttons etc for doing any running repairs or darning that I can. There are others who specialise in proper sewing repairs but I can bodge a basic fix.

Regretfully, the petition to remove #LGBT content from the #UK curriculum has 197,100 signatures.

The counter petition asking for that content to remain, is rapidly gaining ground. It now has 78,919 signatures!

Pls sign the counter petition if able. British citizens & UK residents have the right to sign. Pls boost otherwise!

Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead is an amazing book, I've just finished reading it. Splendid title too.

I have, perhaps slightly rashly, requested the Books of Jacob from my local library. The last thousand-pager I read and enjoyed was Ducks, Newburyport. I made a start on Ullyses last year but bailed out early on as I just wasn't in the mood.

I've just read Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, translated from Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones.

Despite the body count this is no ordinary who-dunnit, set in a wild, remote location with a quirky, female protagonist.

It's fascinating to see how the novel's translator has translated back into English the multiple different translations of William Blake that the characters have made from English to Polish in the original.

@jasonhickel I listened to someone from the CBI on BBC Radio 4 yesterday morning banging on about economic growth. And inside my head I was shouting at the radio, "Why? How can anything possibly grow and grow and grow? Why is this even a goal?" I look forward to reading your latest book.

Imagine having an economic system where ecologically urgent and socially necessary things (renewable energy, public transit, affordable housing) are not produced simply because rich people cannot make enough profits doing so. Irrational barely begins to describe it.

Which astronauts have been the keenest space gardeners?

On my list I have:

🌱Scott Kelly, dubbed the "On Orbit Gardener" for rescuing the space zinnias.

🌱Mike Foale, referred to as "Farmer Foale" for continuing his plant experiments on Mir after the Progress collision.

🌱Don Pettit, who grew the famous "Space Zucchini" (and also sprouted seeds in his underpants...)

Who else?
