When we first decided against federating with Meta, the whole thing was still abstract and in the future, and we haven’t revisited it since, and no one else has yet asked about it.

There was extensive and hot debate about federating with Meta across the fediverse when the option first arose. There ended up being consensus in our 5-7 person mod group to avoid federating due to mistrust of Meta. At that time, we believed the potential risks outweighed the benefits. However we also said we were open to ongoing dialogue on the question…

In response to a call from @iftas, our admins have updated Alaskan.Social’s rule regarding transphobia etc. with new language: “Misgendering, deadnaming, or promotion of so-called "conversion therapy" is prohibited.”

@iftas We have added your suggested language to our community rule regarding transphobia! Thanks for creating a template for us to use. We look forward to collaborating with like minded servers as we update & keep our rules current.

One of the biggest differences between Alaskan.Social on Mastodon vs Twitter/Meta is our local, hands on moderation.

When you report an account for breaking our rules (against spam or bigotry for example) we can limit or ban that account or its whole server from our community, or we can warn or remove the user if they are from our server.

Our team of mods makes group decisions via a Signal chat to ensure cooler heads prevail, and you’re welcome to join us if it would spark joy for you 🥰
