I know I'm late to the party to be finishing @karenhao's Empire of AI Now. But now that I've finished the book, I can tell you that it is nothing short of a masterpiece. It needs to be required reading for everyone in the tech industry, or anyone who wants to be in the tech industry.

The book also articulates why I've had such an aversion to OpenAI since its inception in 2015, more so than any other tech company.

It's time for today's last (not least!) session - and the very last session of a packed #UNOpenSourceWeek.

Julian Stirling of the Humanitarian Technology Trust kicks off "Open Technologies in Healthcare" with a presentation on a 3d-printed #OpenHardware microscope.

Incredibly interesting, great example of open tech for social good, check out the website: httrust.org/.

Sitting down for a lunch interview is definitely an interesting experience! Leaving the roughly two-hour conversation with George Hammond, I felt like we'd covered good ground but had no idea what of that would make it into the piece. In the end, I think this covers it pretty well, though I (of course) have a couple of quibbles/some context to add.

Your periodic reminder that not only is using hue as the sole way of differentiating things in a document an accessibility issue, it also renders the information inaccessible via a greyscale display or printer. Not everyone reads on screen, not all screens display colour, and not everyone who prints wants to print everything in colour.

Statement from the PCI RR Managing Board on ... the decision by Wiley to refuse preprints that have been peer-reviewed by PCI/PCI RR osf.io/tn8mh

This is a deeply problematic decision!

This decision is not only PCI-hostile. It has far-reaching preprint-hostile consequences.

I hope this is all based on a big misunderstanding that Wiley will soon be able to resolve. Wiley should rapidly rectify its highly problematic decision.

🎙️ Have you heard Future Knowledge?

This new podcast from the Internet Archive and Authors Alliance explores how knowledge is created, shared, and preserved in the digital age.

llustration for the "Future Knowledge" podcast. A surreal, retro-futuristic landscape blends past and future elements: a bust of a Roman figure, stacks of books, file cabinets, satellites, DNA strands, skyscrapers, and futuristic buildings. A cartoon mouse steers a ship’s wheel connected to a giant computer mouse. An old desktop computer displays the Authors Alliance logo, and an open file drawer shows a yellow folder labeled Internet Archive. At the bottom, bold text reads: “FUTURE KNOWLEDGE.”

Forced Consent & Consent Bypass

16 June 2025
Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."

Here is the four-step process behind the cover picture for Peertube's crowdfunding campaign, which ends in a few hours. I'm really happy that the 'Livestream from your mobile' goal was reached!

:pt_happy: The campaign: support.joinpeertube.org/en/

📦 Artwork source: peppercarrot.com/en/artworks/f

A black-and-white line-art image of the Peertube mascot sitting on a large 3D Fediverse logo. The mascot features many elements of the campaign, such as the mobile and editing tools. This is the first step: the sketch. The character is drawn in detail while the background is more sketchy. Some handwritten notes with arrows indicate which nodes of the Fediverse logo will be connected as 'instances': Peertube, Pleroma, Gotosocial and Mastodon. The second step is to work in grayscale to give a sense of volume and depth, and to prioritise the elements. This helps me decide whether I want a dark on bright composition or the reverse, a light on dark background. I can also manage the light source. For this one, I wanted a big, overcast sky and a very soft light over the whole scene. The third step involves tinting the grayscale image and setting the overall colour palette. The background is still undetailed, but the full illustration at thumbnail scale is already very close to the final version. Once I am happy with this step, I can move on to the next one.The final version has all the details and contrast, as well as the effects: the nebulaes, planets, glows and crisp edges on the characters and objects. I'm happy with how I found a colour palette around the orange mascot that I had never explored before. It was tricky to incorporate all the colours of the Fediverse while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing colour palette.

Good morning Fedi friends!

This is the last week my wonderful interns @samaaberg and @patel.riyen are here in Paris 🥲

We're currently creating short extracts of the Fedi promo video that anybody could use on their own social media accounts. We'll share them by Friday.

And Sam & Riyen just talked me into uploading the video to YouTube, to spread the message far and wide. Here we go: youtu.be/YRJHIJy5Nno

Adding more subtitles by volunteers (Polish, Catalan, etc.) soon! ❤️

This felt too valuable not to share. Braille-labeled maps of washrooms to help people find and use facilities in the washroom. Everyone deserves to get in, do their business, wash their hands, and get out in peace and safety.

This seems valuable for all public spaces.
