It’s interesting how differently people value customization in their devices.

Some are perfectly happy with a system that works out of the box, while others slowly shape their setup until it really feels personal.

Over time, those small tweaks often seem to matter more than raw specs.

For the and crowd: a concise summary of the hardware design guide for JieLi AC695N/AC696N Bluetooth audio SoCs.

It offers crucial DFM advice: you MUST provide test points for the programming pins (USB, power), as the small QFN package necessitates programming after SMT assembly via a USB connection.

For the #electronics and #embedded crowd: a concise summary of the hardware design guide for JieLi AC695N/AC696N Bluetooth audio SoCs.

It clearly states the non-negotiable absolutes: input voltage maxima (VBAT 5V, LDO_IN 5.5V), and the necessity of battery protection circuits.

It highlights the most critical component: the 24MHz crystal oscillator, specifying ±10ppm tolerance and 12pF load capacitance for reliable Bluetooth RF performance.

It provides a pragmatic power design choice: use the internal LDO if you can, or a >2MHz external DCDC converter (with 1% feedback resistors) for the 1.26V core if you need the efficiency.

Finally, it offers crucial DFM advice: you MUST provide test points for the programming pins (USB, power), as the small QFN package necessitates programming after SMT assembly via a USB connection.

The latest post by @pluralistic is about a very smart approach: the . I know very little about hardware manufacturing, but this looks really cool and feasible.

And finally, an 3D-printable parametric coil-winder. Whether you're doing teeny-tiny guitar pickups or massive secondaries for your Tesla coil, this'll do the job.

And finally, thanks to @polpo for bringing this to my attention: the amazing PicoPCMCIA from yyzkevin, a standards-compliant low-power PCMCIA card which adds *everything* you could possible want to add to your vintage laptop or palmtop.

Like, NE2000-based Wi-Fi? Sure. MPU-401, Sound Blaster, and GUS emulation? Yup, and a hardware synth engine to boot. CD-ROM emulator? Yeppers.

Very tempted to snag one for my HP 200LX...

Then another makes an appearance in this "graphics card" from Aiden Chostner - plus a Peltier element for sub-zero cooling it, to eke out the maximum possible performance.

No, it won't get you more FPS in Crysis. It'll run Doom, though.

Back at work for today, and it's going to be a gentler month - around four articles a day to stay on-target, after squeezing a month's worth of work into a little over two weeks of December(!).

First up in 2026 is a look at the dabao from Andrew "bunnie" Huang - an upcoming development board built around the "mostly-open" silicon Baochip X1 microcontroller. Launching on @crowdsupply soon!
