Three weeks ago, we kicked off the first-ever at the United Nations, and memories are beginning to settle in.

Together with this group of highly experienced open source maintainers, we created a special moment at .

Their hands-on expertise shaped the conversations and brought real-world insight into building open digital infrastructure — work done by few, but essential to all of us.

In June, the Sovereign Tech Agency took part in UN Open Source Week in New York. We convened a delegation of open source experts to bring hands-on experience into the global conversations around digital cooperation and public infrastructure. Across multiple sessions, we highlighted the essential role of open technologies and the responsibility that institutions share for supporting them.

Explore what we shared and learned at in our latest blog post:

🌏 45+ countries assembled for 1 shared mission: Open source at United Nations 🇺🇳 HQ. Last week at the UN Open Source Week 2025, I witnessed something truly powerful.

Over the span of a week, the event hosted an Edit-a-thon, Hackathon, and Maintain-a-thon, focusing on essential documentation, building solutions to global challenges, and fostering sustainable OSS stewardship.

What made the event truly special for me as a researcher and OSS advocate was its participatory spirit. It wasn’t just about listening to talks, everyone engaged deeply in breakout sessions as contributors, collaborators, and community members. I had rich, meaningful conversations with people from Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs), industry leaders, government agencies, NGOs, OSS consulting firms, journalism, academia, and student groups. Each brought a unique lens to what open source means in their context, and how it can drive local and global impact.

For me, it was a week of shared learning, building relationships, and reflecting on how open source is not just about code, but community, inclusion, and collective action.

A massive shout-out to the organizing team for executing such a seamless, inclusive, and impactful event. Thank you for making it a grand success! Omar Mohsine Mithusha Kajendran Mélina Emdadi and many others

The #UNOpenSourceWeek inspired its audience to consider practical steps on how open source can provide scalable solutions.

For #EOSA, it reinforced the need for expert skills and #leadership that will build and support the #opensource ecosystem.

With fresh insights from key events, Nicholas Gates and Sarina Magham offer a reflection on the expectations and untapped potential of open source - and what it means for Europe.

Thanks to the @sovtechfund and I was able to attend 2025 🇺🇳 representing the @ThePSF and focusing on how maintaining, supporting, and securing is a non-negotiable part of worldwide Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). The trip was an inspiring reminder how many incredibly smart and talented people are working on this problem together.

It's time for today's last (not least!) session - and the very last session of a packed #UNOpenSourceWeek.

Julian Stirling of the Humanitarian Technology Trust kicks off "Open Technologies in Healthcare" with a presentation on a 3d-printed #OpenHardware microscope.

Incredibly interesting, great example of open tech for social good, check out the website: httrust.org/.

And now some live-tooting from "Invisible Work, Critical Code – The Role of Maintainers in Open Source Digital Infrastructure", a session led by the Sovereign Tech Agency. Examples of public infrastructure: electric grids, railways, roads and bridges, and... sewers! And now for a provocative metaphor: "Open Source is a sewer". Let's see where this leads us! #UNOpenSourceWeek #UNOSW
