This is unpopular opinion, but for Firefox to live, Mozilla, as it currently operates, needs to die.

They forgot their core user base hates cloud and AI features. They want a simple browser that connects to web servers and displays pages. Meanwhile, executive are getting fat salaries and bounces while begging users for money on AI and other privacy intrusion projects like adding perplexity directly to Firefox. They lost their vision long time ago.

The Global Advocacy team of Wikimedia Foundation is now the steward of the Country and Territory Protection List, a policy that balances data transparency with contributor privacy by limiting the release of sensitive statistics, especially for smaller communities.

Always love seeing the Pac-Man Rule spreading around the Python community. It was in the opening intro at #PyconUS!

Over 200 developers worldwide met at the Wikimedia Hackathon in #Istanbul from May 2-4. For 3 days, they collaborated to develop tools, games, and debug bugs for #Wikimedia projects and inspired each other. Congratulations to the participants who contributed to the projects by writing code. #wmhack

Beloved programming community: many of you are hearing about the US DoJ threatening Wikipedia.

Some of you are thinking of ways to thwart this. Download the Wikipedia dumps, put it on IPFS or hand-couriered USB drives or other less-censorable systems.

A good impulse, but missing the point.

Wikipedia is not just a big document or a software artifact.

Its true value is that it is effortlessly available to a wide audience, can be updated rapidly, with no preconditions to view or edit.

@cscott EU maybe?

Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.

using #firefox or a derivative? Setting browser.ml.chat.enabled=false turns off the brand-new AI features.

You're welcome.
