Probably the coolest, most nerdy frontend to OpenStreetMap:

$ telnet mapscii.me

(Use arrow keys to move, and a/z to zoom in/zoom out)

Just got reminded of the time I've read Akio Morita's (Sony's founder) memoire "Made in Japan" where he tells of his early days and his founding of Sony.

It's been many years but the part I remember the most is of his time in the Japanese empirial army during WWII where he was tasked to reverse engineer technology from a downed US fighter plane.

It was the first time he and his fellow engineers saw a printed circuit board and he wrote that it felt like looking at alien technology salvaged from a UFO.

wow I hate the way my brain works sometimes

literally, go from "I'll implement riichi mahjong in Haskell" to "well, maybe I'll have it be extensible to allow different mahjong rulesets as well" to "hmm, I bet Haskell would be really good for implementing scripting languages and limiting their possible results with the type system, I bet I could implement a domain specific language to allow untrusted clients to implement arbitrary mahjong rulesets and ensure the safety using Haskell's bidirectional type polymorphism"

please, stop me

Ffs, if you're still searching through Google - please don't. There are DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Startpage, SearX and in almost all cases it's enough. If you really can't find something, switching to Google search is one "!g" away in DuckDuckGo.

wired: using TLS as a generic internet condom and praying that a root certificate authority is never compromised by … hang on … you say CNNIC Root CA was a front for the Chinese government the whole time?

@pea @drlabman@mastodon.technology ah! OK yeah that makes sense. Has anyone patched RSS into AP for a similar effect? Would be neat to follow my RSS feeds through AP....
