God, this bubble burst is going to be so brutal

It’s a google screenshot showing the results for the search “all you can eat buffet near me.” The result is an AI overview advising that the user type “all you can eat buffet near me” into a search engine

In 1953, Iran had a democratically elected prime minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, who committed what, in the eyes of the British Empire and the United States, was an unforgivable sin: he nationalized Iran’s oil industry.

(1/11)

The image shows a tweet from a verified account named "Fifty Shades of Wh..." with the handle "[@]davenewworld_2." The tweet is set against a dark background with white text. The tweet reads: "If you are an American who wants war with Iran and WW3 to break out, let me remind you that the US + UK orchestrated a coup in Iran in the 1950s, overthrowing a democratically elected prime minister for daring to nationalize their oil when we could've just had a century of peace."

Earlier this year I sold the site to a another organization, was running the site by myself and the costs of doing so started to become too much. They approached me with a good offer and I transferred ownership a while ago. They've just migrated to another platform apparently and decided to remove the forums. I wasn't aware that was a plan or intention, but then again as I no longer owned it I guess they didn't have to. Still very disappointing.

Trying to see if I can bring the forums back elsewhere now."'Adventure Gamers has long been recognized as the largest English-language website dedicated to the adventure game genre. The EU is still ignoring the requests from creatives to protect their rights. This initiative creators-for-europe-united.eu/ has written an open letter ready to be signed by all of us (so far 5411 signatures).
They ask for:
- full transparency about which works were and will be trained on
- adequate remuneration

It especially focuses on the things that would be confusing to people coming from #Maya or #3dsmax, and some weird quirks of Blender that are easy to miss or misunderstand.

Recently uploaded a slightly updated version of my "Intro to Blender" talk (originally put together for Animation Exchange 2021) to Peertube. It was recorded in 2.9 but 90% of it still applies even to current version 4.x, though I added a few text notes and made some small edits to clarify recent changes.

Should still be helpful to those coming to Blender from other software.

Hidden optical secrets of the Parthenon revealed by Oxford archaeologist

In a remarkable breakthrough blending archaeology and advanced 3D technology, Oxford University archaeologist Professor Juan de Lara has shown how the ancient Greeks used advanced lighting techniques to transform the inside of the Parthenon into a stage of divine spectacle. De Lara’s study finally answers an ancient mystery about how light was used in the world-famous temple dedicated to Athena on the Acropolis of Athens.

Instead of the traditional vision of Greek temples as bright, marble spaces, de Lara’s research shows that the Parthenon was kept dim. This dark atmosphere created a theatrical setting for a dramatic lighting effect that seemed to illuminate the enormous chryselephantine statue of Athena by Phidias, made in 438 BCE...

@Johns_priv My point with the French example (which is actually a great example in this context), is you're mistakenly using relative percentages as definite markers of national political alignment and this country and its unusually high percentage due to other factors (active promotion) demonstrates how that is misleading.

2025-05-17

@Johns_priv You've entirely misunderstood on several levels.

You're drawing wild (clearly highly prejudiced) conclusions from percentages of votes when those percentages are influenced by *several* factors, not just average local politics.

You're also mistaken in assuming only people from Mastodon are voting. People can find this petition from anywhere. It's promoted on Bsky also.

"Eastern European countries showing what we already know about them" Maybe check your xenophobia there, buddy.

This is an updated workflow for turning Grease Pencil strokes into a base mesh that can then be used for sculpting. The previous workflow used the Convert to Path option, which is now gone. #B3D #Blender3D #Blender

2025-05-16

@Johns_priv Wouldn't be too quick to draw conclusions from that.

France having 1100% votes doesn't mean France is 1100x the most LGBTQ-friendly, it just means the campaign was promoted the best on French social media AND people are inclined to participate in EU petitions.

There was an earlier EU petition for taxing the rich that only made the threshold in France mainly because it was only promoted in French, not cause others wouldn't support it if they knew about it.

You noticed how google search became unusably shit a few years ago?
Turns out that was on purpose

The recent court documents showed that Google's internal testing demonstrated that significantly worse search results would not harm their business operations. This apparent immunity to quality concerns stems from the company's dominant market position, which the recent federal court ruling
addressed. "Since Google doesn't have any real competition, it can make the best information hard to find, forcing users to stay on Google for longer and interact with more ads," Papadimitriou said. "This is dangerous for consumers, most of whom think the best results
appear first."
The strategy appears to be working from a business perspective. The study suggests that poor organic search results actually benefit Google's bottom line in two ways: they make paid advertisements more valuable to users seeking accurate information, and they force users to refine their searches multiple
times, exposing them to more advertising in the process.

@tomgrochowiak Other interesting books in that direction include "Acting for Animators" (Hooks), "Peoplewatching" (Morris) and "Impro : Improvisation and the Theatre" (Johnstone).

What are your "required readings" for a game designers, that are not design books.

For instance, I think any systemic designer benefits from knowing the rules of DnD and MtG, including how they evolved and (most importantly) why.

2025-05-08

@tomgrochowiak "The Animator's Survival Kit" and ideally also "The Illusion of Life", the two bibles of animation... because (too often forgotten) it is *essential* for designers to understand visual communication and how movement works, especially if they work at all on player movement or NPC behaviour, or anything visual or feel-related.

If you want the long(ish) version of why and how, read this: gamedeveloper.com/design/why-d
