I really liked the Murderbot books, I recommend the highly. The AppleTV series doesn't visually picture some of the things the same way I did in my head, but the snark? Oh the snark. Fantastic. And not just from Muderbot, the rest of the cast is fantastic. #murderbot

@tchaddad I mean, I know babies are small but this thing ... eh, what else am I going to do with it? I'll send it anyway ;-)

2025-06-13

I really know nothing about babies. I'm not like, a fan or anything. A friend just had a baby and I thought "I'll sew a bib, babies drool a lot!". I printed a pattern, cut it, and sewed it. It came out pretty good! Until I looked a little more closely and saw that I had somehow printed the pattern at 1/2 scale. Unless this baby has a 2" neck, this thing isn't going to fit. Ooops. Back to the cutting board.

STOP COMBINING SHIT WITH AI, just stop it. Am I going to have to pick a new base OS? I am NOT impressed RHEL10.

2025-06-05

Any time I am listening to a presentation, and the speaker starts to mention AI, I just tune out.

Just spent a good hour trying to figure out why snmpd wasn't answering. Because tcp is different than udp. #headdesk #networknomicon

Last night scrolling my phone I saw an add for a CyberSecurity conference. It was localish, so I clicked. After an entire page about it only being aimed for "professionals" and specifically not "Professors and students, or sales industry professionals" (and others) which seemed unnecessary, I was unable to see the schedule or even the speakers until I registered with personal info. No thank you, I don't need to go. It just felt... icky.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a docker-ized server monitor? I've probably used them all over the years, but never within a docker container. Lately a fan of Zabbix overall, and thinking of hub.docker.com/r/zabbix/zabbix but having never done the containerized thing, happy to take any suggestions. HomeLab / HomeCloud monitoring, nothing heavy. Could also do LibreNMS or Nagios easily enough, also willing to try anything else.

Huh.. Win11 finds it fine, so I guess its just my phone. Interesting! But I can do what I wanted, just using the laptop, so all good I guess.

I feel like tech has gotten smarter, and I've gotten dumber. My Roku Ultra says it does Miracast (on the website) but in my settings I see only Airplay. And my phone (android) does not see it when searching. So does it not do it or am I doing something wrong? #feelingold

Anyone have good suggestions on CompTiA network plus classes on YouTube? (or cheap online like Udemy or something). Since we have gone to Cisco phones, the phone people need to know way more about networking than they do presently. I was thinking a Network+ would get them the basics, and let the network folks off the hook for dealing with things that annoy them. (Like telecom people) The usual budget cuts are preventing me sending anyone to a class, and these folks are not 'read the manual' types. I was thinking video classes might be a good compromise.

I thought I would reuse a bit of old hardware as a log server. And it had an iDRAC card. Nice. Until I went back to my desk, remoted in and got this bullshit.

I have never had a phone migration go smoothly. They are always a shit show. And 90-95% of the problems are not technical but just bullshit, people making mountains of molehills. I got supervisory scolded today for laughing when someone told me how dare I cause these problems today, on the busiest day of the year. WTF?! Laughing was apparently not the correct response.

Announcing: justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

I started working on a new doggie bow tie for a dog named Oakley. And managed to sew the elastic backwards. Oops. Giving up for tonight. The machine is running smoothly now so that's good!

Im cleaning out lots of old files. Im trying not to be a data horder. Amusingly I found two old talks I gave. In 2012 I gave a talk titled "Don't get hit by a bus!" and in 2019 "NMS for Fun and Profit". Reaching father back, in 1999 I made a presentation on "Using Email Effectively". Anyone remember Eudora? I also found some documentation on 'addzone'. No source code, sadly.

How do I set console blanking on Alma Linux? Either that (or plus that) I need to add a HDMI off switch to the side of this case. Not that its completed, there are a few "sticky outy bits" keeping the case from closing. I know, the screen is a tad large, but I like it anyway. I added "#consoleblank=300" on the cmdline in /etc/default/grub, but it doesn't seem to be blanking after 5 minutes. I have to fix the button too. It lights, but doesn't power on or off the odroid. I must have missed a pin. #almalinux #linux

MAC SE/30 gutted with a Odroid and 10" LCD installed instead. Screen shown running htop. Screen is just a tiny bit too large for the Mac shell, so the edges are missing.

@rootwyrm @mattblaze I don't miss the speeds of dial up or xDSL but boy do I miss the days of ISP choice and competition.

I was given new shorts as a gift. And they still had the security tag. This seems to happen to me too often. They are easy enough to break off but this one had the dye capsules. The trick is to not pry against the tag. Slip the crowbar in between the two halves of the tag and use a screwdriver to pry the back off against the metal bar.

Stupid tags. Security.tag on clothing. Dye type so if you flex the tag from prying, you please the dye on your item. Two glass capsules, one with red dye and one with yellow are the top of the tag. Back is just plastic and a retaining pin
