So I won an award at my job. I'm on overnights so I missed the meeting where they announced it.

It came with a $20 Amazon gift card that got e-mailed with no context.

I reported that email as a phishing attempt.

Now I gotta take an online safety class because I reported a false positive.

The argument

"I have nothing to hide"

Is false and devoid of humanity. It is above all else a human trait. Choosing not to share what you did last weekend with your employer, that was a choice that deliberately favored your privacy. When you chose to withhold the tears in that emotional and vulnerable moment, that was a choice for privacy too. We all have things to hide, because again, it is a human trait

Moreover, these choices impact others as well. If the "I have nothing to hide" argument preceeds giving your unlocked phone to a random party, you violate the privacy and therefore humanity (and its respect) of those close to you. Remember that friend you've exchanged Signal messages with, about that particular dire situation you are in? You just grossly violated the trust put in you.

Same with random apps you install and grant whatever permission they ask for.

Please, please always be considerate of others. Seemingly small actions might have a dire impact on those close to you. Do better and be better.
