Many people ask about the story behind the name ‘Paulina’. When the project began, we called it Data Tools for the Public Domain. It was a long, quite boring name, so we thought about renaming the tool after an author whose works were in the public domain. Paulina Luisi was a Uruguayan feminist author and doctor from the early 20th century, and we thought her name was a good option.
Of course, you can learn more about Paulina Luisi, and access her works, visiting Paulina: https://paulina.toolforge.org/author/Q7154948
Paulina is available in 15 languages thanks to the contributions of dozens of volunteers. Would you like the tool to be available in your language? You can help translate it: https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/paulina/

This year Paulina is participating in @outreachy, an internship program that aims to increase the presence of underrepresented communities in the open source world. Around 20 people applied for our project, which involves adding functionality to edit Wikidata directly within the Paulina tool. The developer selected for the internship is Nurah Wakili, from Nigeria, who is doing an great job and is blogging about the experience. We recommend reading her latest post: https://nunucodes.wordpress.com/2026/01/21/midpoint-project-progress-integrating-wikidata-editing-into-paulina/
Paulina is a free software project and its development is collaborative. The code repository is available on Wikimedia's GitLab: https://gitlab.wikimedia.org/toolforge-repos/paulina
We also maintain a page with the technical documentation: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Tools/Paulina/Software_Documentation
We welcome contributions and suggestions for new features. We also encourage you to report bugs or suggest improvements on our issue tracker: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/7320/
One of Paulina's most useful features is that, thanks to #Wikidata, it allows you to find out the copyright term for any country. In the top menu, you can click on the "Countries and Terms" option to access a list of countries with their respective copyright terms: https://paulina.toolforge.org/countries/
Clicking on a particular country will give you access to more information and statistics. We plan to add much more info to the country pages in the coming months to help you discover local works and authors.
Paulina allows you to explore cultural heritage in a variety of ways. You can search for authors (like Mary Shelley https://paulina.toolforge.org/author/Q47152) by name, nationality, gender, and copyright status as a creator; or creative works (like the film Metropolis https://paulina.toolforge.org/work/Q151599) by title, type of work, and country of origin.
Tip: if you leave the search field empty, you can apply filters to obtain lists of authors or works (see img).
In the future we plan to improve existing filters and add new ones!
Did you know that Paulina won the Wikimedia 2025 #CoolestToolAward for the most innovative tool?
You can watch the video announcing the award, which also explains how Paulina works. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coolest_Tool_Award_2025_Paulina.webm
Thanks to the award, we'll participate in this year's #WikimediaHackathon, where we'll be working collaboratively to add new features to Paulina.

There are some really useful suggestions in this article as to what #GLAM|s can do in the #Wikiverse / on #wikidata (it's pretty straightforward to get started): https://culturalcontent.substack.com/p/sharing-the-worlds-paintings-on-wikidata
