I was born with a full head of hair.
After my second summer working as one of the bakers at #McMurdoStation I spent two weeks with my parents and younger brother in Hawaii. I don't remember which island it was, probably Maui, but we had a great time.
We lived in Jamaica for just one year, my freshman year at the Bronx High School of Science. Walking to and from the train station every day, my strongest memory is that there was a community of the followers of Sri Chinmoy based there which included a number of businesses like a health food store and a barber shop. These people were mostly white, very clean cut, and running and fitness seemed to be their central focus.
This is one of my favourite photos of my dad (he's on the left, at the end of the table). It's British Hong Kong in 1954-5 and he's a recent arrival from Toishan. Dad didn't end up making a career out of baking, but I did a fair amount of bakery work in my twenties and thirties and I've recently returned to a baking role.
Sometimes Dad would drop me off at City Hall so I could have a straight shot through on the 4 train. Other times I had to get the train from Parsons Boulevard or 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue.
I'm a New Yorker, born and raised, a child of the early 70s who free ranged on the streets of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. In my high school years I commuted, first from Jamaica then from Jackson Heights, to the Bronx.
