Cargo ships are finding that using sails allows them to reduce fuel usage by *one third*. Only 30 of the world's 60,000 cargo ships are wind-assisted right now, but it appears that the entire industry has just figured out that it would be foolish *not* to put sails on their ships. The potential reduction in emissions—CO2 and otherwise—would serve as a significant reduction in the rate of climate change. nytimes.com/2023/10/03/climate

Spotted at my local leisure centre, in the car park, this wonderful piece of whimsy…

A small sign, such as you might get in an art gallery, that reads:

Artist: F. Prefect (b. 1955)
Piece: Life, The Universe & Everything
2016
Steel, Paint

H.O.M.A Horsham Objects of Modern Art Sponsored by HEX

This triptych of columns was created in 2016 to mark the 15th anniversary of the untimely passing of Douglas Adams and situated so as to blend into the benign setting of a leisure centre car park. The eponymously named installation, an homage to the 3rd book in the Hitchhikers series, has the structures of 'Life and Everything' standing aside column number '42' as the "Universe'. Each column, like a vertical time capsule, holds a carefully wrapped towel, six packets of salted peanuts and the recipe for a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. A much love mile marker for the park joggers of Golgafrincham the trio of columns, in Shaftspole's style, is a firm favourite for humans and other forms of alien life that find themselves stranded on the planet. Much loved apart of course by the Vogons, they hate it.

"The Answer to the Great Question. Of Life, the Universe and Everything. Is. Forty-two,' said Deep Thought with infinite majesty and calm."
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyThe full installation; three vertical tubes/pipes/poles in a car park, with the maintenance number 42 on the central one.

Partially related to my previous post: Did you know that all coal contains trace amounts of nuclear material? Mostly Uranium and Thorium. Burning the coal releases this nuclear material into the atmosphere! (Who could have thought).

In a 2009 report by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it was estimated that all US coal plants combined emit more, much more, nuclear waste than all US nuclear plants combined *consume* in nuclear material.

nrc.gov/docs/ML0932/ML09328044

How does the amount of nuclear material released by coal combustion compare to the amount consumed as fuel by the U.S. nuclear power industry? According to 1982 figures, 111 American nuclear plants consumed about 540 tons of nuclear fuel, generating almost 1.1 x 10E12 kWh of electricity. During the same year, about 801 tons of uranium alone were released from American coal-fired plants. Add 1971 tons of thorium, and the release of nuclear components from coal combustion far exceeds the entire U.S. consumption of nuclear fuels. The same conclusion applies for worldwide nuclear fuel and coal combustion.

"More than 1,000 “super-emitter” sites gushed the potent greenhouse gas methane into the global atmosphere in 2022"

Hard to know what the most shocking part of this story is, but just the idea that 25% of current warming is from methane and **40%** of that methane is from entirely avoidable fossil fuel facility leaks is horrifying. theguardian.com/environment/20 #methane #climate #fossilfuels

Was reminded that it doesn’t help at all with ocean acidification. Earth needs less carbon no way around it.

#Design’s purpose is to create something people actually want.

That desirability is critical, and lots of things roll into it. If done right it has the potential to find 10x, or 100x the value compared to poor decision making.

In order to create something people actually want, you must:

- learn about the problem and opportunity space deeply
- break down the problem and methodically solve it
- create an aligned solution that matches users’ mental models
- ensure it actually solves the problem
