Rolled Credits on #MetroidDread. The story in this game is nonsensical, but it was a delight to play. This is probably the only game in the series where I actually enjoy using shinesparks.

The final boss was bonkers too, as was the escape sequence.

@repeatro Just today I had the thought that at some point the more "mainstream" games got sucked into the orchestral soundtrack singularity.
I'm not entirely against orchestral music, but it all sounds kinda samey. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
I went looking for examples from "earlier" with soundtracks that I really liked and somehow all I could think about were Indie games from the past 10-15 years.
But Yamaoka's soundtracks are a great example!!! Although neither the soundtracks, nor the game qualify as "mainstream", even though both developed quite a following. AFAIK Team Silent said themselves that the never imagined that Silent Hill would become as well know and loved as it did.

@irgndsondepp

Agree, Yamaoka continued creating awesome Silent Hill soundtracks for the following titles, even for the later ones without the Silent Team behind it. Especially the vocal songs with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn are such amazing songs, even without the games in mind.

The soundtrack for Silent Hill was composed by sound director Akira Yamaoka, who requested to join the development team after the original musician left. ๐Ÿ”„
In addition to the music, he was responsible for sound effect creation and audio mastering. ๐ŸŽน

To differentiate from other games and to give it a cold, rusty feel, Yamaoka chose industrial music. ๐Ÿญ
He did not watch game scenes but instead created the music independently from the visuals.

The Silent Hill developers wanted to create a game that would appeal to the emotions of the players. ๐Ÿ–ค
To achieve this, the team introduced a "fear of the unknown" as a psychological type of horror. ๐Ÿ”ฆ

The plot was intentionally made vague and occasionally contradictory to leave its true meaning in the dark, encouraging players to reflect on unexplained elements. โ‰๏ธ

1999's Silent Hill for PlayStation 1 uses a third-person view with real-time rendering of 3D environments. ๐Ÿšถ

To mitigate the limitations of the console hardware, the developers used distance fog and darkness to obscure the graphics and hide pop-ins, which, in turn, helped establish the game's atmosphere and mystery. ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

In the last few weeks, I played, and completed, Zelda 3 for the very first time. As a PC guy, I did not own a Super Nintendo during the 90s ๐Ÿ™‚

The game is still very good and enjoyable. I understand why it was so well received at the time.

That said, at some occasions I stumbled into some "unfair" challenges that made me lose a lot of time. Certainly a way to compensate for the small size of the over-world. But a bit frustrating nonetheless.
Thankfully nowadays we have solutions and save-states ๐Ÿ˜‰

For #VGCMay2025 I played #Metroid Samus Returns on my #Nintendo #3DS, it was my first time taking part in #VideoGameClub, I usually limit myself to vote on the polls and then get mad the game I wanted didn't win (LOL), tried to shake things up this time and had a lot of fun!

Samus Returns is a pretty good game all things considered, specially for newcomers like myself, I first tried playing Metroid II and got frustrated after like 5 minutes, my sense of orientation is pretty bad ๐Ÿ˜…

I was wondering what to play next. Was thinking maybe "Maniac Mansion" (1987), but I'm going for "Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders" (1988) instead.

No EGA this time. It'll be the 256-color version of the game. ๐ŸŽจ

This version was produced by Douglas Crockford โ€” the "Javascript: The Good Parts" guy โ€” and released only for the Fujitsu FM Towns, a japanese IBM-incompatible PC.

The FM Towns supported smooth horizontal scrolling which, TBH, feels kind of weird. ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

@repeatro It sort of feels like a missed opportunity that they didn't go ahead and give the player a selectable character. Indeed it would be close to twice the work (I imagine a lot of animations, textures, and etc could be reused?) but still, it was always neat back then when a game actually let you select your character. It just wasn't much of a thing back then.

@nazokiyoubinbou

Yes, we had selectable characters in games like Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark that even changed the playthrough you experienced based on the character you selected.

But I am not sure if Lara would be such an icon until today and Tomb Raider such a successful game series overall if she only was one of two options to play, especially during a time when the male Indiana Jones was a big thing.

...several changes before the developers settled on the final version, including a name change to Lara Croft after Eidos executives in the US objected to the original name.

The inspirations for the character of Lara Croft included the character Tank Girl, the Indiana Jones series' titular lead, and the John Woo film Hard Boiled.

Once he realized creating and animating two playable characters would require double the design work, he decided to slim back down to one. The female character, originally named Laura Cruz, was his favorite, so he discarded the male character before development work began.

The initial concept for 1996's Tomb Raider was created by Toby Gard. He and his team wanted to mix the adventuring style of Ultima Underworld and the 3D characters shown off in Virtua Fighter.

When Gard first presented the idea for the game, the concept art featured a male lead who strongly resembled Indiana Jones and was asked for a change for legal reasons. When Gard then created the initial design document...
