Got a PS1 at a car boot sale. Supposedly in working order, but I'd rather do a thorough inspection before powering it on.

Step zero is to dismantle the controller to get rid of all the finger gravy. 🤮 Then test it in my known-good PS2.

The next step is to look inside the PS1 for any leaking capacitors and such. Only then power it on.

And... it boots fine but the front ports seem dead. 😞 Time to disassemble it further...

An european PS1 model SCPH-9002 from probably late 2000, with an original dualshock controller.

There's also a third-party memory card, which I've tested in my PS1 and seems to be broken. When you try to use it, it always complains it's unformatted. The dualshock controller fully disassembled, to clean all the nooks and crannies.Testing the dualshock controller on a PS2, with a controller tester application. Every button seems to work, and the vibration motors also work. The PS1 with its cover off for a visual inspection. It's mostly clean inside, and the power supply looks good. The metal shields have a bit of oxidation, but OK.

We are 12 hours now into Metroid Prime 4. 🕛

It's still not a Metroidvania, and I don't expect it to become one during the rest of the game. Controls, boss fights and movement are fun, but getting challenged by being stuck is very unlikely in this guided, non-complex world architecture. 🏜️

Thanks to @dylenar, @fastjack25 and @synduckate for joining yesterday's stream. 🧊

I will continue the playthrough already tomorrow. 🗓️

Day 1/10 coding with generative A.I.

If you missed it: last week I was complaining that my boss came up with a green field project to evaluate "how helpful A.I. is for daily coding and if, when, where and how it can speed us up".

So today I sat down with a heavy heart and wrote my first ever A.I. prompt. The project is pretty stupid (IMO). It's about building up a database and filling it with structured data from JSON exports. At least that's the part I'm building, my two colleagues will build a backend API and a frontend to visualize the data.

I'm using Anthropic's Claude Code (no endorsement) and I used it to generate the whole thing in Python. I haven't looked at everything yet, but it looks reasonable and with just a few small adjustments, I could make it work. Out of curiosity, I threw the error messages at Claude without any suggestion other than "fix it" and... it did. It even explained correctly what it changed and why.

I now have working Python code to read the JSON input, transform it slightly and dump it into a PostgreSQL DB. I also have (absolutely insane levels of verbose) project documentation and tests and a Jenkins pipeline that I hooked up and got working within minutes.

.
.
.

And I'm sooooo conflicted. If you've been following me for a while, you probably know my stance on generative A.I.
I absolutely hate it. I rarely hate things, but I do hate A.I. I have various reasons that I don't want to get into right now.

And I was kinda hoping that it would be... bad. I was expecting a terrible experience, borderline unreadable spaghetti code, flaky tests, security issues left and right and a CLI that will just crash no matter what you do.

I got my crashes alright, but the rest of it seems pretty okay. 😢 And the crashes were rather easy to fix and the model even found the errors itself after I prompted it again.

It feels like the only thing left to do is make the documentation less verbose and readable for an actual human. 😩

I recognize that this is a very small green-field project in a popular programming language with a clearly structured, machine-readable input to start from.

And nothing, absolutely nothing, that I got was something I couldn't have written myself.

But I cannot possibly write code this fast. I haven't even managed to read everything yet.

And despite all my expectations I ended up learning new things. I saw some pretty cool pieces of code that I hadn't even thought of.

I am disappointed, because I kinda found myself enjoying the experience. And that goes strongly against my beliefs that ethically A.I. is one of the worst things that has happened to humanity in recent history.

We'll see what the next few days bring, but I honestly don't think that there's much more work to be done on my end.

I'm not proud of the code, I don't fully understand it, but it looks like something I could maintain for the long-term and I'm shocked at how quickly I was able to nail this together.

At least I got some "real" coding in when I solved this day's AoC puzzle earlier. I wouldn't cheat myself out of solving a puzzle, if that's what you thought.

9 more days...

Sorry if this just trails off... My head is still reeling and I can't quite put my feelings in order yet.

It would be very cool if they made an actual computer mouse based on this badnik design~

We had an absolute ball of a time yesterday, getting a bunch of #Owncast #Freestreamers together to play Unreal Tournament 2004.

Big thanks to @enoent for hosting and making it happen, welcome to the Owncast gaming community @synduckate, and thanks for the frags @hylas, @logan, @Astarael, ENOENT, Synduckate, Romulus, and a few randoms who happened by to take part.

Take a look at that directory; next time we'll double it >:3

Final bosses in #JRPG shouldn't be difficult to beat. If I already spent 60 hours or so on your game you better stop breaking my balls and let me finish it and see the end credits.

@maxalmonte14

I understand your viewpoint, but for me a challenging final boss fight is a crucial part of a retro JRPG. I want them to be unforgettable. Therefore the moment when you finally beat them needs to be earned by grinding your characters and repeatedly fighting them. That way e. g. I will never forget the final boss fights of my first two finished JRPGs, Secret of Mana and FFIX.

The only thing I don't really need are save points too far away from the final boss.

@dylenar

Yeah, it became very atmospheric. But unfortunately I have no more hope this becoming a Metroidvania, although it's a cool and fun game. It's just to linear.

I only played 30 minutes of Parasite Eve, but I'm already enamoured with it. 😍
In fact, it already had its hooks in me with the intro FMV alone. The music and visuals are gorgeous. And the opening in the opera is scary, confusing and tense. The FMV with the rat!!!
I've just fought a few battles so far, but the gameplay seems pretty robust already.
How have I never played this before!?
It's very different from how I imagined it. Thanks @hk for saying exactly that a few days ago. That really caught my attention, because I too imagined it somehow as a Resident Evil clone.
It kinda is, but the ARPG elements make it feel very different from traditional survival horror.
I hope I can play some more soon. 😁

As famous and impressive as the game library for the Playstation 2 is, it's lineup of launch titles seems to have been the complete opposite.

It was released on 4th March 2000 in Japan, and for the first six months, famous games for the PS2 one might have heard of are:

Ridge Racer V
Dead or Alive 2*
Armored Core 2
Dynasty Warriors 2

*released on Dreamcast a month earlier

Some yearly EA Sports games, and lots of lots of Mahjong and Shogi games.

@irgndsondepp

The main problem of the second movie is the first movie. 😆
The ending of the first movie is not the same like in the Silent Hill 1 game, but Revelations should be the movie adaption of the Silent Hill 3 game. So they had to go for some awkward story decisions to create the link between movie #1 and #2, that is fundamental for the story progression between Silent Hill 1 and 3 game.
