"If you understand how digital systems, and notably how recommendation algorithms, work then you understand that there is no limit to how unbalanced the amplification of certain voices and suppression of others can be. You could have 8 billion people on X and only 800 fascists, and yet the fascists would still crowd you out."

Exactly. Posting on a platform with a million accounts doesn't guarantee you a potential audience of a million.

"When you write for Fascintern media, you are choosing to publish with them. When you post on X you are basically pitching a story to Der Stürmer. You are not speaking to anyone that they don't want you speaking to. You're not being courageous; you're collaborating. You're associating your name with that outlet. And you're making them money."

In an unusual turn, we are dealing with a power-aligned dominant media ecosystem that is pushing to overthrow the existing political system

Just read "Fascintern Media" by @robin ( berjon.com/fascintern-media/ ) and it reminds me of a line in a recent YouTube video about how moderation policies work there

"But the thing I believe, one of the reasons such leaders get support in modern world because we are not allowed to speak about the atrocities and devastation such politics will lead the world into." youtube.com/watch?v=bzH4GXkQ5u

Bonfire Social 1.0 is live! A federated, community‑first social network built on the modular Bonfire toolkit, and it’s only the beginning.

It's time to go beyond microblogging and build apps for community organising, open science, mutual aid, and collective decision‑making. Let's take back the internet with open protocols, consent‑based governance, and portability by design.

I saw this guy, Johnny Ryan, recently in a European Parliament session on #democratictech together with @robin and others.

Today @johnnyryan publishes a great article in the Guardian theguardian.com/commentisfree/

Second speaker confirmed! ⚡️

The #DecidimFest25 will also feature @robin, technologist specialising in digital technology governance. His work focuses on building democratic governance of technology so that our digital sphere begins to work for the public good.

During the Fest, he will participate in a round table discussion dedicated to the open web, a crucial debate in today’s landscape where big tech platforms dominate digital life.

@ntnsndr There are interesting potential bridges between AT and Beckn, but I don't think that you could just go and use AT for ride-hailing or food delivery just yet.

I think it has legs! I'm probably going to do some work on it.

There might be a taxi coop/Beckn thing happening in the Netherlands, will tell you if I hear more.

@ntnsndr Ah, sorry, I thought we'd talked about that at some point! It's becknprotocol.io/, it's a general commercial transaction protocol. It makes it possible to operate open, governed marketplaces. It's being used for ridehailing e.g. with nammayatri.in/.

I think the Nosh people are building on it?

🇪🇺 Digital sovereignty can’t be bargained away

By @robin & Cori Crider

About the recent fail by @EUCommission on #EU tech infrastructure, the backbone of our economy and democracy 🔥

"Enforcing the EU’s laws, reclaiming a fair share of the value extracted by #monopolies, breaking them up to unfreeze markets and using the proceeds to invest in our #digitalinfrastructure could be exactly the kind of economic reset #Europe needs." ✊

"At this very crucial juncture where the long-term stability and existence of our structures is under threat, we will need #philosophers (inside and outside the academy) to envisage alternative ideas for us. This is to engage in what Eric Schliesser calls #philosophicprophecy. Borrowing from Quine, who echoes Midgley, philosophical concepts are, he says “devices for working a manageable structure into the flux of experience.” To engage in philosophical prophecy is to “create a shared horizon for our philosophical future.”
