My most controversial tech opinion: Google is by far the best option among the big tech giants. Their products and services are least likely to fuck you over. Google is also far more transparent about how their services work, what data they use, and how to get your data out.
On top of that, and this is the most crucial reason: Google's golden goose is the user data it collects. This data is safer within Google than it will be literally anywhere else - yes, even if you self-host, because your skills will not be as good, and your means not as vast, to protect and secure your stuff as Google's.
No, Google does not sell your data. It would be absolutely stupid to do so. Using Google's services means sharing your data with Google, yes, but that's it. It does not leave Google. Ever. No other company is as dependent on data as Google, and protecting it is crucial to Google's survival, more so than for any other company.
People get really upset when you point all of this out, because it goes against every bit of marketing and scaremongering over the past 10-15 years, primarily originating at Apple.
You've been suckered.
