Our team shows how the video spread across social media platforms with help from a set of “new elite” influencers on Twitter/X, explore the history of the video’s producer and demonstrate how he adapted his content to attract an audience that rewarded him for resonating with these political narratives. In a 2024 U.S. Elections Rapid Research blog post, a team of @uwcip researchers present a multi-dimensional analysis — across source, content, and spread — of a single misleading video that connects the border crisis to concerns with election integrity. [1/3]

When I tell her that I’m worried
about the future
she replies by explaining in detail
all the things I need to do
in order to get promoted
and though I listen politely
I don’t think she understood me
it’s not that I’m worried
about my future

Joey Schafer presented a poster exploring how social media users' behavior changes after a "spotlight" event — where they receive an unexpected surge of attention. This poster won an honorable mention for best poster at the conference!

Though most of my social media friends think of me as a "misinformation" researcher, my academic home has always been CSCW (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work). This week, CSCW held its first in-person conference since 2019 and I was able to reconnect with old friends and introduce several @uwcip students to the community. They presented lots of amazing work. Let me tell you all about it.
@schaferj The poster would go on the win honorable mention for best poster at the conference. Congratulations Joey!

Excited to be at #cscw2023 this week (presenting in the “Privacy” and “AI Ethics” sessions on Monday) - looking forward to seeing and meeting folks!
@katestarbird And tomorrow, I will be presenting our poster called “Post-Spotlight Posts: The Impact of Sudden Social Media Attention on Account Behavior.” https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3584931.3606984 3/ #CSCW2023
@katestarbird Yesterday’s workshop paper, titled “Towards Incorporating Researcher Safety Into Information Integrity Research Ethics,” talks about the need to learn from feminist media studies and other fields which have considered researcher safety as an essential part of ethical study design. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OAApPd9SkRy4iuFVH-kA45bmEuRum1No/view?usp=drivesdk 2/ #CSCW2023
Very excited to be taking part in my first ever in-person CSCW! #CSCW2023. I presented a workshop paper yesterday at the “Many Worlds of Ethics: Ethical Pluralis’ at CSCW” workshop, and will be presenting a poster tomorrow, both of which I wrote with @katestarbird . 1/
@katestarbird If you’re also at the conference and want to talk about mis/disinfo, online influencers, attention dynamics, and methods for doing this research ethically and effectively as platform landscapes continue to shift, please reach out!! #CSCW2023 4/4
